Topic: Car stalls, idle problem?
in Forum: C3 Engines
i was driving home when the car simply lost power. at first i thought it stalled. but the idle was down to 2000 then revved up to 15000 and repeated this several times. pressing on the gas revved the engine a little but not much. then it shut down. yes it has plenty of gas which was added the day before. turning the car back on the idle revved up and down 10000 then 2000 and so on. this happened several times then it shut down.
bad fuel pump, fuel filter any help would be appreciated.

It really sounds like a fuel problem. When there is a restriction from a mostly plugged filter, restricted pickup, pinched line, or a pump beginning to fail they will act just that way.
Disconnect the fuel line from the carb, connect a hose to direct flow, and crank or start the engine. See what kind of fuel flow you have. If it's good there, pull the filter from the carb and check it, or just replace it. If there in poor flow, pull the line to the pump from the tank and see if you can get plenty of fuel there. It's one step at a time.
You may try removing the fuel filler cap and see how it runs. If the tank vent (charcoal canister) system is not venting the tank you could get a vacuum in the tank preventing the fuel from being drawn out by the pump.
Let us know what you find, and well go from there.
problems and I found the fuel line connecting the carb and the pump was
old and weak. When it got warm the line would colapse, restricting the fuel
flow...
