hecko fellow Vetters, I have a question and hoping for any help.  I have a 1974 Corvette, 350 cu. 197 hp,  four-speed manual.   I'm dumping gas throughout the engine, ie. rich mixture, fouling plugs, smell and horrific gas mileage....  Different advise from different people...everything from, "new carburetor, just needs to be rebuilt to just need a new float".
OK, with that said, I checked my present carb for model numbers, etc..  It's a Rochester Q/Jet.
One number, in a round seal type stamp shows..7047687.  But on the side of the unit there is a pressed stamp the shows the number, 17055920. Both these numbers look simliar on carbuetor sites  but are not listed for this year in any manuals... before I can do anything I need to know what I have...

Not a good week for my girl; right after Christmas she blew the heater core. Cry What a mess.   Luckily for me I live in Florida; I'll just by-pass the system.

Thanks for any help.    Prince

according to the parts interchange manual for a 1974 corvette  the tag shows a carb for early70s carb but the number on body shows for a later 70s car.  also last number for manual trans should be odd. even numbers were for auto trans. neither nu8mber represents a corvette number. when i bought my 75 it had a qjet and it was listed for a 350 olds or a c10 truck. do a search for rochester carbs and you should be able to find what the carb is for. myself i would trust more the number stamped on the body.

It's definitely not a Corvette spec Q-jet. It certainly sounds like it needs a complete and proper rebuild, but if done to the specs it originally was, it won't be jetted or otherwise set up for a Vette engine. It can be set up to make your car run well. A lot depends on the shape it's in...whether it's economically rebuildable. You have to determine that and decide whether to do so or replace it.

...thanks guys for the information.  Found a site www.carburetor.ca; an outfit out of Canada.  Apparently the one I have on now was not the original and they suggested a couple options in attempting to rebuilding it (for under $50).   I'll give it a try, if it does work I'll spring for a "new" rebuilt....Keep your fingers crossed!
