Vette(s): 1969 Corvette Stingray Convertible. Just bought it from my uncle who owned it since 1971. Fathom green, green interior. 350/300, T400.

I just went and looked at what's supposed to be a 427. The numbers on the back of the block are 3989854 or 3969854  (hard to tell). On the front pad T0614TKB. On the back behind the intake is GM8T. I also found K24 on there somewhere too. It's seems like a good deal. Rebuilt 500 miles ago, the guy says it has a truck crank in it ground down to be a mild stroker (does that make sense) With heavier GM rods, 11.0 forged pistons, crane cam, crane gold roller rockers, Holley intake and newer 850 Holley. He wants $2000 for it, I just want to know what the block is 427 like he says or 396. I'm no where near a Barnes & Noble and I don't have a numbers book.

Thanks for any input.

Matt

Vette(s): 1972 conv., sunfire yellow, blk interior, blk vinyl and convertible top. Off frame restoration with American Speed 383 stroker engine producing 500hp plus a 200hp NOS system. MSD ignition. Hooker super competition headers with chambered exhaust.

Matt.

I think the correct number is 3969854. It's either a 454 or 402 from 69-72.

  You're right Al......depends on which site you're looking at. It could be a 396, 402 or 454. One site says 1972 only, another say 1969-1972.

Thanks Al. Actually, I could never figure it out. My wife is a computer programmer and she did it for me.

My book shows:
#3969854
1)402ci-69-72 passenger/Chevelle/Camaro 4-barrel carb, 2 & 4 bolt main

2)402ci- 1970 Nova-2 & 4 bolt

3)400/402- 70-72 Truck 2 & 4 bolt

I think if you look closely at the casting # again, you will see it is a "6", not an 8. They can look amost identical in a casting #. I personaly would run away from any 402. While most any big-block heads/intake/cams/etc. will fit, the bore size is goofy, and sometimes hard to get parts(pistons) for. I had a 69 Chevelle drag car once, that we bored the engine on, thinking it was the original 396. We just took it to the machine shop and said, "Bore it .30 over". We ordered pistons from Manley for a .30 over 396. Needless to say, things didn't fit together very well!!! Many $$$ down the drain.
The "K24" is the casting date, Nov. 24.
The stamp number, however, is confusing.
T0614TKB
T= Tonawanda assy plant. Most big blocks were assembled there.
06= June
14=(June)14th
TKB= engine suffix #: tells what vehicle the engine was intended for, as well as trans(man/auto).
While it's possible to have a Nov. cast engine assembled in June, it is out of the norm.
I would stay away from this one; it's already been mis-represented as a 427.
