Vette(s): 1975 L-48 4 speed roadster, #'s matching, basically stock other that minor cosmetics and tunes.
I picked up a donor motor out of another Vette on the week end. The owner was told it was the original, but when I got it home and tore into it, this is what I found.

The parts looked fresh, pistons were stamped .030, no ring ridge, no scoring, hone markings still in cylinder walls.

When I ran the numbers, I just got more confused. The block could be anything from a 305 to 350 and the heads well, how bout a 62 to 67 327? The valves are so large they are almost touching ??

What the heck have I got here?

Here are the numbers.......

Intake casting # 346250

Block casting # 3970010, stamped V1015C2R and 171128699

Heads casting # 3782461

this is what i came up for the heads 3782461 was used between 1964-1966 and could be found on 327 engines. They
had 2.02/1.60" valves, a 64CC combustion chamber, intake port volume of 161CC's, exhaust 62CC's. These heads have double hump casting marks. these are good heads. now the bad news breaking down the engine suffix code v1015C2R comes down to engine made in flint on october-15 1979 305 with 155 hp that would match with the intake manifold #'s also being from 1979 you could probably get good money for the heads as they are hard to come by anymore |ohwell|

Thanks Garry, that's great news on the heads. I am still a little confused on the block though. The 305 has a bore of only 3.736, this one (my donor) has a 4" bore... could this block possibly have been used to produce a 350? I have not yet measured the stroke, but you can well understand that if this turns out to be a rebuilt 350, I'll be cleaning it up, replacing the bearings, slapping the heads on and looking for a new intake and carb to take advantage of the potential of this thing.
(can't wait to yank my "tired" L48)

Thanks again for your help.

Update .... my Boss at work caught wind of my acquisition and told me to bring the engine to "the shop" ... his shop.

His hobby is CASCAR racing, I'll let you know what his boys find ... or do |thumb|
