Anyone know of an easy way (tricks?) or special tool to ease the replacement of spark plugs on an engine with Headman Hedders installed - 1969 small block? The access and clearance is very tight! I've taken the headers off before and don't want to do it again - especially the side with the AC compressor mounting bracket!!!

Jim, Well buddy it's like this on mine,
on the left bank, it's one from the top, one from under the car, the one directly under the header, is a home made tool that lets me get on one corner of the spark plug and then I hope it's not tight, and the forth I lay over the fender on a blanket facing the headlights and with my right hand,
backwards I slip the wrench on and I ask my wife to turn my hand. The right bank, mine also with AC, well thats another story
..It's an all day project and it's bengay before bed. It's only once a year and I'm glad..So to answer your question; NO, pay to have some one do it..

Jack the front end up ,take both front tires off,go in through the rubber flap that covers the upper A-Frame ,or get out your creeper and go up from under neath the car,the same thing goes for changing the fuel pump, remove the right front tire, you can get at the bolts for the pump just above the frame rail where the brake line crosses the frame and comes out to the brake caliper, piece of cake

If only we could have 2 elbows per arm....
Don't ask me how; but with a big block, headers & A/C, I did all of them from the top one time. I came out totally bruised and I can't do it again (maybe because I still remember the pain).
I like what Ron says, especially because I have to replace a line to my fuel pump this winter. I will be trying that approach.
Flex sockets are great too, but can only take so much pressure on 'em. I broke 2 on spark plugs that were seized (and they were seized from the factory; go figure).

Sometimes, a boxed-end wrench is the best way to get them out. There are boxed-end wrenches that are made with double off-sets on the ends, and that allows you to get on the plug hex securely. At least you can break them loose, and then spin them out by hand, after that.

Piece a cake take it an have it done....
Naw, jes kiddin. Ya can do it jest don't get in a hurry. I ain't a fast easy kinda thing.
I use the socket method like Ron and it works okay JUST SLOW.
Heck after Pigeon Forge I replace the header gaskets so it seemed like a natural to do the plugs at that time.
Worked out great...
I use a spark plug socket with a hex head on it. Put the socket on the plug, put the wrench on the socket. Works great in tight spots.
Headers on my black 79. Use the plug socket with the hex head on it and a 3/4" box wrench like Lynne73. Only use a ratchet with a short extension(maybe 2") on the 6 and 8 plugs. All from above. Can't believe how easy it is changing these plugs compared to original with manifolds. Maybe 30 minutes total. Mike

To install your plugs, try a length of 3/8 fuel hose on the end. Easier than using a socket. Dick
