Albo, you could still have an issue with the EGR, even tho it wants to die when you lift the diaphragm. It could have a small chunk of doo-doo(hi-tek term for crap) in it that will not let it seat fully, and cause weird prollems.
The chirp noise may or may not be associated with the EGR, but...if there has been a leak in the EGR for a while it can lead to the base gasket of the carbatator burning out, and THAT can cause a chirp noise.

Joel, car ran pretty crapy tonight lots of hesitation, when I accelerate it goes but when you just cruise you feel it holding back.

Good friend of mine in our vette club is an older retired mac tool salesman, he's fantastic on Carbs. He asked me when the last time the carb was kitted and I said never. He said I think it is deserving of a kit. I'll pull the carb this weekend and have him rebuild it. Coming down hill to my drive way I down shifted to 2nd and it chirped then also, almost seems like an exhaust leak. When it goes through the gears its in puurrrfect harmony with the RPM's

So how much are EGR valves is it a no brainer to just replace it anyhow?

EGR is a simple bolt off/bolt on deal...assuming the bolts are not seized in the intake. Soak em down well before trying to remove them.

The chirping could be an exhaust leak, depending on whether or not you have metal gaskets on the manifolds where they bolt to the heads. They can "whistle" at times, and it may get worse when you let off the pedal. IF you have a catalytic converter that is semi-stopped up, the extra backpressure could also cause an exhaust leak to make a whistle/chirp noise....as could a lonely cricket under the seat....

OK put the rebuilt Q-jet back on and went for a spin, still have the hesitation and the chirp. Since I have run some of engine additive maybe cat is plugged would that cause hesitation?

I'm pretty sure all the hoses are good as I was able to check that all real good with the carb off.

And still not sure about the egr valve? Plus I guess even though it does not sound it wonder if I do have a bad spark plug. I know last fall when I did change the plugs one was loaded with the white yellow deposits......

Carb looks great thoughBig smile the guy rebuilding it said he never saw one with the anodize still looking like new, light brushing with laquer thinner cleaned it right up.

Car is drivable but anoying.....Confused

See now this is why nobody joins Wink

I know it can only be a few things, I had a bad dream last night I was driving along and the car just died......Confused whats up with that.
Might be tied into what happened at home friday, my 13 yr old son (sorry off topic, refer to first sentice) was running my 3 yr old troy built power washer with a 5 hp Honda engine. All of a sudden it started blowing blue smoke and shut offAngry
Once cooled down I tryed to pull it over, it will pull over and do not hear any clanking but it will not fire and it smell of gear oil?
I'll mess with the car some more if I get a chance, I may have to get under it and pull the plugs, I hate the thought of dealing with those heat shieldsOuch

Paul sorry...duly noted dang Rook made me say it.Big smile
All vacume lines looked great no brittleness or swelling or cracking, the engine bay did not see daylight for years. The chirping noise is what puzzles me it is matched to the RPM speeds up untill shift then speeds up untill shift.
I'm thinking of replacing the egr valve they run between 30 and 120 bucks depending where you buy.
