This is posted under engines because I believe this to be engine related.

After overheating, we can hear a ticking sound in the rear of the car that is engine rpm related.Angry

The background on this is as follows complete with many un-essential facts:

The water pump failed and leaked all the water out causing the overheat condition. I pulled off the road, in the middle of the desert, and allowed the engine to cool down. After it was cool, I added enough water to get me back to my work location (10 miles or so). About half way back it over heated again and all the above occured again and it finally got me back and I parked it. Put the old girl on a trailer and got her back home.

With the new water pump installed, I also put in a new thermostat just 'cause I was there. Also put in a new heater hose. Additonally, the A.I.R. pump was removed and the EFE (exhaust riser) was rendered non operational by plugging the vacuum line which leaves the valve open, I think.

Took a test drive and she runs smooth as silk but intermittenly, we hear a ticking sound in the back of the car. It seems to be from the right side and is definetly related to engine rpm. While going down the road with the ticking present I can put it in neutral and let the engine idle down and the ticking stops. Then revving it up some the ticking varies with the rpm. Cry

Remarkably, while sitting still, we are unable to duplicate the ticking at all, even when revving the engine.

There are no signs of the oil and the water getting mixed up and no unusual smoke or such out of the exhaust. The car accelerates smoothly and she is running great.

Is it possible that a bearing was hurt and only sounds off intermittently with the sound being transmitted through the exhaust so that it is only heard in the rear of the corkpit? Am I over-reaching with that idea? The sound is not increasing in severity, yet, and again, is intermittent.

I tried to get it nailed down to a specific rpm, speed or something, but to no avail.

Would love to hear your thoughts on this.

veerry interesting(while peering through a tall leafy plant)..... sooo let me get this straight, it only "ticks" while driving...not parked?.. and, the noise is coming through the exhaust?? sure you dont have a header gasket leaking??.. or some exhaust issue, like a donut gasket(if its original exhaust manifolds)... or maybe a collector gasket if it is headers?... possibly the flexplate is hitting something while under driving conditions?... might check to make sure your starter is tight??... hehe, the trouble with ticks.. or was that tribbles?  ticks are hard to trace down.. even harder when it doesnt tick while sitting in the driveway to find it....

I'd have to agree with Jim.  I would start looking at the exhaust system first.

Most times with exhaust leaks, I've heard it at the location of the leak. I've had header gaskets go and it usually is a lot louder than a ticking noise and it came from the engine bay....

Anyway, my feeling here is if the ticking noise matches RPM and you hear it under a load from the exhaust, 3 possibilities come to mind: valve (could be a few things), lifter or cam lobe.

If this were a bearing, I don't think it would telegraph through the exhaust. Bearing knocks from my experience are heard in or close to the engine compartment.

Let's see what Dr. Joel or Dr. Ken have to say. I'm still interning in the ER...Big%20smile

Good luck! I hope it's nothing serious...Smile

My only inclination in the exhaust would be if you still have the converter. On my 76 it is on the right side and when the heat sheild decided it didn't want to be there anymore it began to vibrate at a given RPM which drove me nutz (sorry Scott). Like you I couldn't find it underneath at idle. After some careful inspection i found that it had come loose on the top side (hidden from sight but not feel).

Like Paul within the motor I would tend to look at the lifters or rockers they float with the RPM so it is likely that they can "tick" at a given RPM or under stress. But I would think you should be able replicate the RPM in a garage and identify this. That is what leads me to belive it is more of a motion vibration rather than something attributed to engine revolutions.

I have also been leaning towards it being a motion thing Tux, since it can't be duplicated in the garage. Hhhmm, didn't take note of the type road we were on when hearing the ticking. Could have been on some rougher sections, will have to pay attention to that. The convertor is still there so I'll check that out.

We had planned a run to Reno today but was a bit apprehensive about taking her out on the road very far. But, the ticking didn't get any worse over the course of an hour or more local cruising which included some fairly hard driving.

I had thought maybe it was only ticking under load but it wasn't present during acceleration. It seemed to be more prevalent when holding a constant speed or letting off the accelerator, but again it was intermittent.

Thanks to all for your ideas. You have given me a good check list to start looking at.  I didn't quite know where to start but now there is direction to the search.

Thanks ALL!

Ernie

Ernie, I would also take a look at the rear brakes. Pretty common for a spring to come loose or the e-brake cable to let go in there.

Just another thought I had will greasing the Blacray. (Funny how your mind wanderz while your under there looking around.

Tux, I'll add that to the list. Like Jim said, these ticks are hard to find especially when they can't be duplicated in the garage.

Think I'll check a few of the things mentioned here and take her on a shakedown to Reno and maybe learn more about the ticks characteristics. Just have to take advantage of the great weather today.

Thanks.

I'm gonna throw this out, and see what ya'll think...
It may be sticking valve, or a valve spring that weakened with the overheating condition. The noise you are hearing from the rear of the car may well be an exhaust "pop" when the valve sticks open when it should be closed. It can be an intermittent "ticking" noise, depending on the severity of the malfunction.
I was leaning towards a u-joint, but you say it will do this in neutral while reving the engine, so that eliminated that.
Also, the noise may or may not have anything to do with the overheat situation...it may just be a co-ink-key-dink that it started after that. It could happen...

Tux was on to another idea...the cat. converter, if you still have it. It's possible the converter got overheated, and some of the substrate inside came loose, and it now floating with the breeze, so to speak. This is normally described as a rattle noise, tho, but a small piece could make ticky noise...

Yeah Joel, I jumped to the conclusion that it was a result of the over heating but you may be right that it could be coincedental.

We drove to Reno today (65-70) miles and could hear it ticking most of the way there. Didn't get any worse and just stayed pretty constant. We made a few stops in town for lunch and what not before coming home. On the way home we didn't hear it a single time. Got back home and went through town a few times and not a single instance of ticking.

Go figure!

On the way to Reno, it sounded a lot like a noisy lifter ticking or such but the sound was coming from the back. So what you suggest makes some real good sense.

Kind of hard to diagnose now that it isn't doing it. Will take a couple of spins in the ole girl this week to see if it returns.

Thanks alot for the info and I'll post any update that may occur.
