Has anyone ever come across an aftermarket cold air intake setup for our cars? I've never seen one in any of the magazines or catalogs.

I'm wondering because they're available for C4's and later; and the stock system on C3's is already basically a CAI. The reason I'm wondering is because the stock system seems like it's fairly restricted--for example, the 'bellows' doesn't seem as though it would make for a nice clean flow of air from the front of the car. Same with the snorkle design.

I know that many of you have dispensed with the stock system and run 'open' circular air filters, without the snorkle; and that's certainly an option for me. But I was just curious if anybody's ever seen a CAI alternative...

On the '73-'75 cars, you can make a CAI fairly easily, as it is already there! It is based on the L-88 set-up.
The air cleaner base is sealed to the hood, and there is a "Flapper" door at the rear of the hood for incoming air. The only real downside to the design is the two snorkels on the air cleaner base. They draw in hot air from the engine compartment. So...if you remove/seal up the two snorkels, and remove, or fix open the flapper door on the hood...Presto!! One cowl induction, cold air supply to the carb.
To bad you other guys don't have this system!

What year is your car?

The '82s have a flapper door at the front of the hood, when open air runs up thru the hood and comes out on top of the air cleaner. I removed the flapper door and opened up the hole in the hood to accept the new air cleaner that has the filter in the top of the cleaner. Works great. I don't have the crossfire anymore and the new cleaner is not sealed to the hood, but it still gets most of it's air thru the hood.

He was a hoot! Last conversation I had with him, I think he said his wife (or some family member) was having some medical issues...not really 100% sure.

I have a question on a similar issue - on my 1980 when I blew the engine in 2009 I replaced it with a 2010 GM Crate 383 with dual carbs.  Every time I "get on it" I can feel the hesitation and I know I am not drawing in enough air to feed these through the air dam set up.  I have been keeping my eyes open for a universal "ram air induction" set up but all that ever gets listed are those chinsy chrome tubes with a K&N filter on the end of it that it seems every rice burner uses.  There seems to be very little out there to force cold air into the engine compartment of a traditional carborated engine and I would love to know if anyone has figured out a way to do it?  Way back in 1969 I actually had bought a brand new camaro ss 350 and they offered a ram air set up that consisted of two 12 inch wide scoops that you could mount behind the grill - these were connected via tubes to a spot about an inch from the air cleaner - it puished a lot of cold at at the block and worked great especially at high RPM's heading into the fourth gear.  Problem is nothing like that is made anymore that I have been able to find.  Any ideas?.
