What is the correct way to do acompression test? Just pull one plug out at a time, engine hot or cold, throttle open or closed?? What is acceptable difference in cylinder pressure? Thanks for any advice........

First pull the coil wire and ground it so the car doesn't start. You can do hot and cold tests, but what I've seen done is remove all the plugs and take readings...there should be no more than a 10% difference between the highest and lowest cylinders. Then squirt some oil in each cylinder and take readings again. If there's a big difference in readings from the first test...that is significantly higher readings the second time around, it indicates ring wear.

Others may well prefer a different procedure, but this is how I've always seen it done.

Both excellent advice.

If you don't pull the plugs, it can mask head gasket problems.

If the compression is low and comes up with oil added, it's leaking past the rings.  If it comes up very little, it's leaking past the valves.  If it's good, there is no need to do the oil test.

It is more accurate with the throttle wide open.  The throttle restricts air flow and can make the average readings lower.

Be sure to crank the engine the same amount for each cylinder.  If you get 4 pressure pulses on one, and six pulses on the next, the readings won't be an accurate comparison.

Thanks Guys... I've been seeing blueish smoke come out the right exhaust when I rev it up sitting still, but not noticeable on the road. Good place to start, I guess.

Check the vale seals, If the engine has any amount of time on it they are probably hard and letting oil leak down the valve shafts.

if your not running dual springs ----run the updated stem seals from gm as well as the standard o-ring at the keepers -- that should stop the puff of blue smoke at startup    marty
