OK GUYS, I hope I am learning, I changed the plugs in my '70 vert today (350 auto) and the plugs I took out had a tapered seat,  by looking at the head I think this is incorrect...it looks like the seat should be flat, the plugs I put in are AC delco R43S, have a flat seat and a compression washer (ring). Are these the correct plugs? I guess at this point I am also hoping the heads are correct  Confused I am guessing that maybe soon after 1970 the heads took tapered seats??? and that is how the former owner got confused??  Confused Thanks for the help and resorces that this board provides!! Eric, I believe you are right.  I just checked the AC Delco site and they show that after 1970, the small block took taper seated plugs, so you do have the right type of plugs.  I'm sure there are others on this site that can explain why they went to a tapered seat, but I don't know.  I use R45TS plugs in my 74 small block.

The small, 5/8" plugs are normally all tapered seats, while the larger, 13/16" plugs were usually flat seated, with the compression washer.
There are plugs that are made either way, so it's best to look at the heads themselves, if in doubt.
