I have a GM replacement rubber seal that goes between the air filter and hood. Fom what I have learned, the correct seal is no longer available, and this one is a Z28 item that must be cut to fit corvettes. So I measured, cut with a razor knife and glued with black 3M weatherstrip cement. Unfortunately, it didn't hold together after 24 hours curing. I got a couple of good suggestions of what to do over the weekend, but since we're back on line, I wanted to ask here, too. Thanks, Joe

Joe, I have seen the replacement air cleaner and adapter seal for the cowl induction in one of my magazines. If I locate it, I will let you know who has it. I need the same thing for my 74. Someone took the adapter and seal off of mine.

I'm not sure what you are calling the adapter ring. I am just talking about a piece of weatherstrip-looking stuff with a triangular cross section about 1" wide and 2 1/2" tall. It hooks on the air filter tub. Can't be $75, can it? I already have one, just need to glue the ends together. The guys on CF said the factory one was glued then held together with black cloth tape. The one I took apart looked like it was vulcanized together. Joe

Joe, I am just going by what I have seen in the catalogs that I mentioned. My 74 has an air cleaner, but there is space of about an inch to inch and a half between the air cleaner cover and the base. There are no pictures so I am only guessing that there is an adapter ring of some kind between the air cleaner and the hood seal. Does that make sense? |hammer|

Joe, I just double checked. The seal and adapter are for air cleaners from 1973 through 1975. Why would anyone be stupid enough to throw them away?

The cowl induction air cleaner was often thrown away in favor of a chrome aftermarket air cleaner. Remeber, these were the early to mid seventies and the engine compartments were essentially devoid of glitz. I have had two of this vintage and one was missing parts and the other was completely gone.

The rubber seal on my '73 454 looked like hell, so I took the whole thing off to see what would happen---seems like it gets more air now than before-I think the design was flawed & did not flow as much air as it should--Performance was noticably increased, & the induction sound is awesome. I will save mine for keepsake (etc) but I'm running without it now. Try it & see what you think!!!!!! |thumb|

back in the 70's everyone used to take the air cleaner top and flip it over. you'd get more air flow and more induction noise.
