To the uninformed, this sounds like a really good idea. However, raises all kinds of questions. For example, if you replace the motor, how far do you need to go in terms of making sure the new powerplant is consistent with the existing transmission? Brakes? Steering? Suspension? Stuff I'm not thinking of?
Just wondering if anyone has done this or if there are opinions on the subject...thanks in advance for the input...

There are 4 components that have the VIN.. The body, frame, engine, transmisison. If you are going to pull the motor to preserve matching numbers, you should do the same with the transmission.
put a decent engine and transmission (tko-600) in that car and you'll think you are driving a new car.
FOR THOSE OF YOU WITH LOW HP CARS BE CAREFUL. THIS IS A MAJOR DIFFERENCE IN PERFORMANCE. AS WELL AS ECONOMY!

Nice ride! I pulled my stock engine and tucked it in the corner. Check around for race\performance engine builders locally, they can square you away with a really nice engine usually for less than what a crate engine costs. You may have to match your flywheel to the crank, not a big deal they can re-drill when they resurface your old one. Fuel pump and high torque starter depending on your engine. Carefull, it's a slippery slope

remember if you blow the transmission and its need replacing... it is no longer a numbers matching car... dont put anything radical in front of that stock 4 spd without a good rebuild...
better yet... pull it out as well
