Topic: damaged intake flanges

I have a situation and I need some advice: while port-matching an intake, the intake port flanges were scratched and marred. I am rightfully concerned about leaks when I mount up this intake. I will be using good-quality Felpro gaskets, but still... What can I do to rectify the damage, though slight, or minimize it's effects?

I think the damage would have to be pretty severe before it would cause a leak. After all gaskets are designed to seal/correct any surface inconsistencies such as uneven machining. Most are designed with a small amount of crush so when torque is applied through the mounting fasteners it will allow the part and gasket to conform to those slight inconsistencies. If its bothering you, you can take the intake to a machine shop and have them mill a very slight amount of material off the intake mounting surface to clean it up. Don’t remove too much or you will have to double up the intake gasket to fill the void to get a good seal. If it were me I would let it go if there is only scratches.

Thank you for the prompt and thorough reply. The scratches are minor(the dremel hopped out of the intake ports), I'm just incredibly anal. Your voice of reason is much appreciated. BTW, that is a pimpin" kick-ass color on your metal-bumper shark! WOW!!!

I agree with AfterShark. If you are really concerned you could use a very slight bit of Permatex #2 to fill the scratch. Probably not necessary.

I bought the 72 on Ebay from the son of the father who had passed away. I asked him the same question and he said the color was called Atlantis Blue. He said it was a color used in on Vettes in 1969.
Here on C3VR, vettesmakeemwet, said the GM Paint number was GM460486. I forgot to ask if it was indeed a color for 1969 or from another year. I have not seen another vette this color of any year. My 72 used to be Elkhart Green.
Although the paint on my Vette is only about 4 years old the last owner didn't prep it correctly and did a poor job of masking things off. I already have areas that have started to spiderweb, bubble and chip off. Its sad knowing that they didn't take more care to ensure it was done right the first time.
Its what we call a 15 footer. Looks awesome from 15' away any closer then you start to see the defects. I'm going to live with it for right now, just because I prefer to drive it then keep it tucked away. Rock chips are bound to happen anyway part of owning any car.
