Ben - The first "T" is for Tonawanda engine plant. What follows SHOULD be the assembly date. Is it at all possible that "TOT3" is actually "1 0 1 3" (i.e. October 13 1968)??

On my 1968 427 Convertible, the gentleman claimed, whom I purchased it from, when the Original Owner purchased the car, he broke the motor within 6 months, and GM replaced it under warranty with a GM Crate Motor. He said at one time the Vette had been raced for a while, when he acquired it. Of course this is all hearsay, but he was able to produce a Corvette Order Sheet, he said was off the top of the gas tank or somewhere like that. It is in rough condition, but readable. It has a Ident. No., Order No., and even Dealership No. The Option Codes and No. seem to match whats on the car, and says the car came with a Option No. 02L68AA Engine, which is the 427/400 HP Engine. Is there anyone, or anywhere on the Internet or a service that I can have a reverse search on the Title trail to see what the true story is on this car?

this very well may be..
those numbers are very hard to read..
i would think 10/13/69 though.. my car was built in oct of 69.. my diff and trans and other date coded items are mostly dated in late sep or early oct of 69..
in fact i think my diff is 10/13 of 69
thanks i always wondered what those next few digits were..
Doug, I've never heard of any service that could do the type of search you're looking for. There would be a lot of happy Vette owners if there was. It sounds like you have the build sheet off the tank. If you have the zone no. and dealer no.(no legible dealer name there?), I'd suggest going over to the NCRS website and doing a search for the dealer with their zone/dealer search. At least you might find the original dealer which would at least tell you where the Vette was purchased new. Odds of the dealer having any info on a 68 are ZERO, BUT, if you find a sympathetic service manager, I've been told they seem to keep longer records. But still doubtfull. Sorry.

One source of this information is state DMV's. I've made some headway on my car's history by back-tracking title tranfers (based on the VIN) from one state to another. I'm not sure if all states offer this service. But, each one has cost me about fifteen bucks and was done via the internet.
This is really just a starting point in the investigative process. The title history is only going to give you the names (and possibly old addresses) of previous owners. You will still be relying on their individual recollections of events pertaining to your Vette . . . and the remote possibility that one may have some old paperwork on something.
Hope that helps. Happy hunting.

John
EDIT = additional info

I tried to trace my car through the internet and GM. Kept coming up blank. NCRS does have a registry, your zone and dealer may be listed, mine is not. The NCRS registry is just a directory of member's cars that are documented well enough to determine dealer, options, etc. and it's nowhere near a complete list. I've even had people who claim to be "connected" to GM try to come up with dealer and zone info for me and no luck.
If the car hasn't left it's home state, you may have some luck tracing it through your state's DMV. I'd try that first.
Good luck!

For anyone interested, there's at least one state that does a title search free and on the internet. OHIO. Ohio Dept. of Public Safety. Don't know how thorough it is. Say they won't release private names but do release dealers and mileage. Also pre 93 may be iffy because of lack of automation before then. Found that my 78SA spent some time there, tho. Mike

Thanks to all who replied to my Questions on my Vette. I know this is going to be an ongoing process for information. As I find information that might be useful to everyone, I will post it, and probably many other questions, I am sure I will have, in the future.
Thanks,
Doug.
Thanks,
Doug.
