Greetings;
I'm looking to replace my disributor this winter and am leaning towards the DUI (Davis Unified Ignition). Seems like these units are custom made to specs that you supply to the builder. Anyone tried this unit and if so what do you think of it? Any other suggestions for replacement and experience with aftermarket units? I'm not concerned with the price as much as getting a good unit. I currently have an MSD unit but it doesn't have a vacuum advance and the motor runs like crap in the low rpm range before the centifugal advance comes in.
Here's the website for the DUI: http://www.performancedistributors.com/gmssdui.htm
Thanks,
Rob

Do you have the MSD Streetfire? I've got a 300hp GM Crate in mine and have no problems with the MSD Streetfire in all ranges.
Let us know if you go with the DUI on ease of set-up, install, performance, etc.
Good Luck!

It's the 8571 Pro-Billet Aluminum Base; the unit is without an advance. Maybe I'll drop in the 8572 which has the advance.

Another option: We carry the later HEI, brand new distributor with tach drive, for $199.00. You get the convenience of genuine GM parts availability for a similar price.

I agree with Ben. I have an MSD Pro Billet (no vac adv) in my 406 and using 1 medium and 1 light spring. All heck breaks loose from a dead stop!!
Lighten up on your springs first before spending $ you may not need to

I run one, works great, drops right in, run 12v from the fuse box, done, you don't have to worry about the spark box dieing on ya, if you run one, and if by chance the Mod or coil die on you on the HEI for some reason if you are on the road, you can get stock HEI parts from any auto parts store to get you on your way unlike MSD, its been 4 yrs. now , no problems, I run the street version, the difference between it and the race version is the coil, the race coil gives you more top end voltage but because I drive my car like the classic it is I don't wind it past 6800 anyway. anips 2010-02-26 10:39:14
anips: So when you say you have one, I assume from Performance Distributors? Either way, I ordered one from them, spoke with Scott who will set up the unit for my application. Should be in my hands either Monday or Tuesday. They also recommend opening up the gap on the plugs to 55 due to the better spark. Did you do that?
Rob
Rob, yes its from PD and yes I opened the gap, I ran one of their Race units in my dirt modified on alky, with #145 jets all around, worked great, the vette runs smoother than it did with the point setup, MSD makes good stuff but if you want the CD effect you have to run a spark box and I had spark box issues in the past, if you want smooth operation on the street you should always run a vac adv, these young guys think they are going to go faster without it, Ive done all that s
t, it doesn't work that way on the street, when you get your unit it will have your built in mechanical adv. scribed on the base of the dist. add you initial static timing and that will give you total timing, good luck.anips 2010-02-26 21:15:53
