I am planning on upgrading my points to electronic. Although a HEI with tach drive would be nice, I do not have the $500 plus they are asking. I see several posts referring to the Pertronix 1 and Pertronix 2 units. My question is has anyone tried any of the other products that are out there and how would you rate them? (ie: Mallory Unilite conversion kit, Crane XR-I conversion kit and any others out there?)

I have the pertronix 2 with their coil and wires in my 71 I paid less than $200 shipped to my house from an internet source. Not to hard to install. My 68 has MSD tach drive distributor 6AL box with the rev limiter chip wires and coil this is the best so far, but like you said $500 + . The rev limiter sure helps when your hot rodding and watching more of the road than the tach though.

It looks like Pertronix is the way to go as no one has responded with info on any of the other brands. Must be a reason!

I had he Unilite setup in mine for a while. It work but I took it out when I had the distributor recurved an just haven't had any reason to put it back in. It was simple to install bu I don't know if it was better then a good set of points .

I don't know about the Pertronix II, but I have gone through two P-I's. I do not like them. I have the crane unit in a 68 that was very easy to install, and nothing really to go wrong mechanically. Inexpensive too.

I have the pertronix II and am completly satisfied with it. I also have an MSD dist. with corvette tach drive that is a better hi-performance set up, but it also costs almost 500 dollars with the box. I think that you will be happy with the pertronix II and their recommened coil.

I put a Mallory Unilte on a 72 smallblock. Unit looked and worked just fine. Big difference in engine performance. Much smoother

Rick,2yrs ago I put a Crane XR-1 kit in my 73.It's great.Simple 2-wire hook up. Quicker starts better performance.Look in Summit Racing catalog it's around $64.00. Go for it!

If your engine is fairly stock or a mild build the electronic distributor upgrades will probably work great. I went with the full MSD set up because it was much better suited to 11:1 compression and a 3/4 race cam. Horsepower/performance = cost, no question about it.
