I feel like an idiot asking this question, but I have been running the casting numbers off of the motor I justed pulled ou the 81 to see if it is numbers matching or what. I have had no luck, so I whipped out my GM manual and it shows that the casting number should be on the driver side above the water pump and as an option was sometimes at the rear of the oil filter area.
I do not have any numbers anywhere near those locations, but the numbers I do have are on at the top rear of the motor, but as I stated it is not coming up.
Where are you guys and gals getting your numbers and is there possibly a best site to pull the info? I googled engine casting numbers and got a site named http://muscle-car-resto.com/block. Also, what exact numbers are you inputting?
Thanks for any recommendations.

If you are checking for a numbers matching car, I'd be checking the stamped engine number against all the manufacturing codes for your model. This will give you more information than the casting number. The engine blocks cast as particular "numbers" or layouts were used in more than just Corvettes.

As I said above, you need to check that your engine number (individual to each engine) is correct for your car. It should be stamped in front of the passenger side head.

Your casting number is on the left(drivers) side of the block beneath the heads and manifolds around #5 and#7 piston bores of the block. The pad on the passenger side front of the block will have a # stamped , and the last 6 or 8 #'s will match the same last #'s of your VIN- flandy

I'm glad you asked qurtz, cuz' your not alone on this one. Just the other day I was trying to find the #'s off the engine of my '81. And your right, they're not where the GM manual says they are. Some casting #'s were all I could come up with as well. I thought maybe I was need'n new glasses !

Can anybody tell me how to tell if I have a 1968 COPO. I was told at our club meeting the other night that 3 different people thought I had a COPO, but didn't know how to find out. There was a small number of COPO's made in 68 with 550 HP, & that is what mine is putting out, we had it dyno"d yesterday. The car only has 45,573 actual miles on it. It also came radio delete, not a hint of an emergency brake, & no spare tire holder, there is no place to put one when it had the old exausts on it. On the passenger side back of block there is stamped HPR any ideas as to what this is.

Thanks for any suggestions
Beautiful cars last (2) dudes, Greg and Bob. Always loved the bumper cars, but was told they rode a little too rough for momma!
Got another dumb azz ?? There are no serial numbers on the front passenger side of block under the head which totally bums me out. On the Block Casting number location, there is a large 48 out in front. Could that possibly be an L48. Double TT is supposed to have an L81, but I can tell you there were plenty of BUBBA's tweaking on her and I am trying to get her straight. Would hate to sell off a numbers matching motor eventough it was low HP.
