Dear fellow C3VR friends and members,
I am starting an 'engine contest' (for education purposes as well) this contest will consist of the following:
A member can submit engine specs based upon the rules listed below, after which I will start a vote cast. The person with the best engine, or the person with the highest picked engine will win, and I will start saving to build it.
Here are the rules:
Must be carbureted (EDLEBROCK, DEMON, OR HOLLEY) no EFI computer crap. Must have a HIGH CFM RATE BUT NOTHING BELOW 700CFM OR HIGHER than 950CFM.
Must include a COMP CAMS, or CRANE CAMS camshaft.
Must have an upgraded crankshaft (I don't care what one, pick the best one based off of previous knowledge or specs)
Must have MILLER, CRANE CAMS, or COMP CAMS roller rockers (you pick the type)
Intake must match the brand of the carb
Spark plug wires must be between 8.5MM to 10.4MM either MSD, or TAYLOR, you can also choose: Nology HotWires
Spark plugs can be AC/DELCO SPARK PLUGS (RAPID FIRE 2), or BOSCH PLATNUM 2 (CHOOSE FROM EXPERIANCE)
DISTRIB AND COIL CAN ONLY BE MSD (for this type of application I would prefer the MSD HVC 2 series).
THE IGNITION MUST BE MSD AS WELL
THE DISPLACMENT MUST BE EITHER: 350CID/5.7L, or 427CID/7.0L
Remember this is a racing application don't get all cheap and wary. But it must be STREET LEGAL AS WELL, IT MUST BE ABLE TO RUN ON PUMP GAS! BETWEEN 89-100 OCTANE. IT MUST BE ABLE TO PRODUCE 500-650HP at the crank, with at least 450 LB/FT OF TORQUE TO THE REAR WHEELS. THE PRICE MUST BE UNDER 8K AS WELL.
SUPERCHARGERS ARE APPICABLE BUT NOT ENTIRERLY ENCOURAGED! SUPERCHARGERS SHOULD ONLY BE USED TO KEEP THE COST DOWN!
HEADERS ARE A MUST!!! EITHER HEDMAN OR HOOKER
HEADS NEED TO BE UPGRADED AS WELL (EDLEBROCK, OR WORLD ONLY!)
PISTONS NEED TO BE UPGRADED AS WELL (KB ONLY!)

Louis, with all due respect, I think you are being too specfic for this type of general question/contest. Requireing specfic name brands creates a lot of limitations. This will leave out a lot of good input.
I am guessing that your goal is to get ideas to build your own engine, and these are the possible or actual items you have already selected. Nothing wrong with that. But I would present it a bit differently than a contest if thats the goal. There are various brands that might meet your specs, and may perform better or worse.
For a contest and for education, I recommend loosening up a bit. You may get some great surprises, and want to buy something else and sell yours. Why limit yourself? For example, I'm going to use a VooDoo cam. And while I prefer the MSD, there are others that do similar tasks, perhaps not as well. But that's some the fun and education. This could encourage discussion as the advantages or disadvantages of a product with similar specs, but different results.
I find nothing wrong with being specfic in regards to streetability, fuel requirements, etc. There does need to specfic goals. It does leave me out, I'm building mine with lesser goals in mind, and lesser cost. My focus is cruising with a bit more kick than OEM. You will get to read about my build up, step by step with dyno test included. It's going to be an article in Corvette Enthuiast Magizine.
Okay, there is the teacher and tech combined coming out in me. Good luck with your quest. Should be interesting. Have fun with it.
Not trying to be a jerk, but if your expecting something amazing you need to give us free reign on what parts we can use. I'm not sure why you are limiting your selections anyway.
Just so you know there may be a lot of parts there out on the market that are much cheaper then the ones you are asking us to use and some parts you are asking for are more expensive then other items I might choose to use.
Again, if I do this exercise, I'm going to give you a list of parts of how I would do it.

I for one would like to see the different ways folks arrive at this.
Just build a basic 383 stroker and add a 200 shot of nitrous for when the extra power is needed at the track. Since you said 427 - choose that but it will cost much more.
Keep in mind with the increased power your entire driveline must be up to par.
Why is the brand rules so restrictive? Also do you mean we can use small blocks and big blocks or do you mean no strokers?

Not doing this to the vette, I mainly think that it is a good education process as the people that are submitting the specs must include math as well. I wrote this quickly this mornin beofre work, I had this in a dream. THe brands if you can find something better then go for it, its all open. THe displacment can be no smaller than 350/5.7L, and no larger than 427/7.0L. NOS is not an option.... I hate using spray..... Superchargers are as far as you can go..... and no TURBOS!!!1 Strokers go for it. At this point any way you could do it you can, keep the price under 9K...... I know that drivetrain, and rear suspension components need to be upgraded to support the power. However if the engine is good I will build it..... Not right now, but I will start to save up for it. It would be nice to have tha tkind of power later on. But for now I am just looking for a little bit bigger edge than stock... like Ken.

I'm working on an engine package now.
Trying to minimize cost and get the power. Simulating through dyno software. At this time I have a really nice prelim engine that is making 500 hp and 550 lb ft. It has a really flat torque curve that is showing 500 lb ft average numbers.
More details to follow. May not be what you are looking for, but its what I would build if I had some much deeper pockets.

l00l, I' not really lookign to build it... Just want to see the math, and learn how to actually build a high-performance engine. But as a consolation prize the best ones ona vote, I will build the highest voted one later on down the road. It would be nice. But for now I want to really get into how compression rations, fuel and are mixture, and differnet componets behind the engien can actually help improve the performace. I need to learn this stuff or my life with cars will be a big sham.....That's it, only Matt? Ken, no? Ben, no? Hey well, at least Matt is making the effort, come on guys this is a god learneing thread...
