On top of the cost of a new crate engine, could someone tell me typically what additional cost am I looking at to have the engine installed? Labor+parts(?)..

I am currently considering getting a new engine for my '82 and would not like to be stuck in the middle of the project with no funds.

Thanks!

Up here it typically costs about $800 cdn to pull and install an engine, any parts needed would be on top of that.

Typical prices here near Philadelphia run about $65.00 per hour so even if they took two full days it would be less than $1200.00.

Hi Ron,

Just interested in your experience with install of engine. What might be he cost of the engine? Here in Eagle Pass, Texas might be problem unless I head south of the border. '77 model w/ 65000 miles - original? I don't know. Ron

Engine cost vary dramatically depending on what you want regarding HP and torque. You can get a basic motor for about $800 at Pep Boys or Checker. There is also a place in Texas there that has engines for even less. I don't remember the name off hand but if your interested I can find out for you.

The General has a number of options from $1200 to $4000 depending on options. Just go to your local GM dealer and buy the Performance Parts Catalog.

I've seen the different performance engines in the catalogs (and the prices), but I am trying to determine what is a realistic figure for labor and additional necessary parts to install on top of the price of the engine.

I just dropped a crate motor in my '79. While pricing the cost of Labor, I found $1,100 to $1,200 to be the average estimate for parts and labor here in Las Vegas. I ended up having a friend pull the old one and drop the new one in for $600, plus the cost of belts and hoses a water pump and a fuel pump. Another thing to consider is the completeness of the crate engine you buy. I opted for the GM 350 HO DELUXE P/N 12496968. It usually runs around $3,200, but it's "complete from carb to pan." It even comes with a chrome air cleaner. Just be sure to add up everything you'll need for the install, and you should be fine.
Another recommendation would be to consider converting the exhaust to a true dual setup. I got that done for around $500-- Dynomax Ceramacoat headers, all new exhaust pipes and mufflers. Good luck.

Andy:
Great info, and great looking ride!

For me, my friends, it's not the cost of the labor to pull out the old and put in the new, but more a question of the thoroughness, and knowledge of the person doing the work. I would gladly pay the cost of the motor in labor to have the work done correctly, and professionally and not have the vehicle "break" on you a week, month or whatever down the road!

Since I'm not as mechanically inclined as I'd like to be, breakdowns tend to PISS ME OFF, and taking a vehicle back to a mechanic 2, 3 or 4 times to fix the little stuff that got overlooked, or was "okay" by anyone's but the owner's standards is enough to keep me from performing this change at this time.

Hopefully, one of these days I'll have the confidence in someone to let them rip my baby apart and put her back together again.
