Topic: Engine Missing Under Load

I haven't been on again for awhile, sorry.
But I don't care where you buy the parts, it's more what parts you buy. Felpro gaskets and Clevite bearings are excellent, and both can be purchased at Autozone. The other part brands you won't find at Zone. And the other recommended brands are a good choice.
71Shark and I stripped all the stuff away in the engine bay for the heart transplant. She ran for the last time when she got her pic made tonight.

I have a bit of a dilemna. I need the heads off the engine in the car to go to the machine shop and be married up to the new bullet. Can you pull the intake manifold and heads off the engine in the car and then pull the engine? I've only ever pulled them either complete or complete sans carburetor and a plate on the intake. I will need to pull engine & tranny both to work the seals, etc on the tranny while the engine is out however, I really wanted to get the heads to the shop before we will have a chance to pull the engine/tranny out.
Can I pull the heads now or do I have to wait till we get the engine out?
Again, any advice is greatly appreciated!

you can pull the heads... no problem..
pulling the block is very easy after that

Either way is cool, but I personaly hate leaning over the fenders of the car for the amount of time to pull the heads(which are quite heavy, that way!). But, then again...I'm also quite lazy!

[QUOTE=Adams' Apple]You can remove the heads in the car, but....it will take just as long as pulling the engine! If you have the hoist, and the time, why not just go ahead and suck the engine out, and then pull the heads?

he is right about the leaning over the fenders part... it does suck..
the only reason i would pull them off separate was that i wasnt touching the bottom end.. or didnt have room for an engine stand
Dennis,
The previous gentlemen are correct in the removal of heads on a Vette especially on you back.It is easier in the long run to remove the hood(be sure to mark or scribe location of hinges,so you put the hood back in the same position)along with the right wheel so the hoist can slide in and snatch the engine..Be sure you take off the fan and fan clutch and you can carfully lift out the engine. Also suggest you take carb off of intake, distributor, and of course all accessories, and tie them back with bunjie cords out of the way..If you are careful you can do this without taking out the radiator, albeit I always take out radiators to have them cleaned to insure I start new engines with clean cooling system..
I have see people drop a cast iron head on fenders and it is not a pretty site especially on fiberglass...
Also would suggest you find a moving company to borrow or rent that type of blanket to put onto fenders..A little safety factor..
Good luck and I hope for the best.If you have any question that I may help you with, please do not hesitate to ask ..
Remember the only stupid question is the one you do not ask.......Take care
The thought of a head going thru the fender

[QUOTE=dnv]Thanks for the input guys. I think we will pull the engine and trannny (front & rear seals leaking) together and with the heads on it.
The thought of a head going thru the fender makes me naseous.

it will be easiest if you take engine out separate from transmission..
unless you have a removable crossmember you wont be able to take them both out together at all.
and even then youll need to have the front end jacked up..
its not worth the effort.
take engine out.. then trans.. its alot easier..
