OK i know this has been asked before and i have read it and followed the links but still cannot figure it out, yes that elusive number, but before i present the number, how do i know if the engine i have was the original engine ?
OK so now my numbers from the pad on the block near the water pump, they are V10D2TXL or V10O2TXL and the next number down is C74112394, if any one can provide links so i can decifer this i would be very grateful.

Thanks for the responses it now looks like i shall have to buy "Another" Corvette book, oh well if i must !!
I'll re-check the numbers to see if i have mistaken number, but i could have sworn it was TXL at the end, i guess that could explain the pinging !!!
I have checked the casting number at the rear of the engine and that seems to be correct for my car or a truck
But where do i find out what the original engine number was when the car left the factory ?
Thanks
Gary

should have been
http://www.minuit10.net/EngineCode/chevy/TXC-UTT.htm
this says it is a 350 from a van or bus with a 4bbl producing an amazing 165 hp..
OK now i am depressed, i bought my dream car, the car i have waited for, for around 30 years and i have been ripped off , by some piece of scum, the old addage "buyer beware" does not help my dream car has turned into a nightmare, ok maybe a little dramatic but that's how i feel it would appear (and i have yet to confirm) that i am driving a 76 Vette with a truck engine, i guess this would explain the pinging and what i consider to be lack of power, i could start ranting at this point but what good would it do, i shall just have to go and buy a 'real' engine now, though God knows how i am going to afford it, let alone explain it to my understanding wife.
Anybody got a good engine they don't want?.
Perhaps i should pick up a 454 from Chevy ? oh God the expense.
Sorry folks i'll sign off

well your not really that bad off.. unless you parted with numbers matching cheese to get it.
the pinging just means you need to tune it up properly..
do a good thorough tune up (needs to be done on any used car you buy as the PO may have been an idiot.)
it is fairly normal to buy a vette with an engine from something else. it is still a 350.. you can still do anything you could do to the original motor..
in fact tuned properly it should give you good torque for spinning the tires if that is your thing.
really a 1976 vette wasnt anything to write home to mom about from the factory in the power dept. a factory 350 from 1976 would be dissapointing by todays standards (or by 1969 standards for that matter).
without a casting number I cant be sure but I would think a c-30/3500 block would be 4-bolt..
give it a new cam, carb, and port the heads and its a whole new engine.
remember a 350 is a 350 is a 350.. the only difference between the 165 hp model and the 225 hp model is air/fuel flow.
if its not numbers matching and you didnt buy it as numbers matching then you really dont have anything to complain about as long as the engine still has bore capacity. Id take that 350 and turn it into something hot. if you blow out the bottom end doing it.. oh well.. get a short block and transplant your new top end.
there have been many many threads here about how hard it is to change to a BB. unless your a rockefeller just turn that 350 into a bad mofo
if the PO claimed it was numbers matching than id call the man and demand money back. if he said it was corvette motor.. id call and ask for a partial refund.
if he doesnt respond appropriately.. file a small claims suit or if it was enough money call your lawyer.
by the way for future reference anytime you buy something like this.. you should use VISA/MC. if they dont take it.. use a visa check.. you get buyer protection and warranty extensions with most platinum cards.
in 1975 a 165hp (2) and 205 (4) horse were available
in 1976 a 180hp (2bolt - CKW,CKX,CLS) and 215 (4bolt - CHC, CKC) horse were available.
