Charity,
If you can get through a few tanks of 93 Octane without the booster and without the knocking, even on hard acceleration, then you will know that you don't need the booster.
No sense spending more for fuel than necessary.

Yeah, I've been through about a tank of 93 with a bottle of boost.  But I have added to the tank of crap 3 times to equal about a tankful.  The pinging seems to be less and less and I have set the timing back to where it was before I put the crap in it.  I am dissapointed though I had hoped the pinging/knocking would go away quicker.  It is dissipating little by little and the idle is getting smoother too.  Also it seems to be running less rich, I'm not smelling as much fuel.  Hopefully I can run it with just the premium and not have add higher octane or boost to every tank.  Because I still haven't had the chance to really open her up.  Live and learn I suppose.

Mick, you have a 350/350 also?  I would imagine your engine compression is the same, 11 to 1?  Have you always used premium?  The premium here in Connecticut is 93, can you get higher octane since your closer to the oilLOL?  Has your engine been rebuilt?  If so did was it modified so you can use unleaded?  Questions questions, always learning....hopefully....

[/QUOTE] Yeah, I have the 350/350; same comp.  Yep, I've always put the Premium in, plus the lead additive every time I fill up!Big%20smile  Well, a couple of times I forgot to put in the lead additive......Wacko  The $1.00 store sells the lead additive and so does Wally*Mart.  What oil?  It moved to Oklahoma with my neighbor Okies(not an insult, a compliment - I have quite a few Okey buddies). LOL  Premium here runs 92 - 93 octane.

No rebuilt yet, not burning oil and it's not broken, yet..........but when I do I will have it modified for unleaded or put a crate engine in it (save the original).  What all have you done to your new rebuild?  Modified?
Questions are a "good thing." LOL

I try to keep the car as original as possible, except for the Goodyear Radials.  The only thing modified on the engine are the hardened valve seats to allow for unleaded fuel.  I just didn't know it would need to drink racing fuel!  The previous owner said he broke a timing chain at about 50k miles, I don't want to know how he did that.  There was a very tired 400 small block in the car when I got it.  The machine shop said the engine could be rebuilt a 2nd time if needed otherwise I might have kept it in safe keeping.  I powerwashed, degreased, and painted everything in the engine compartment.  Had the original starter and alternator rebuilt, replaced hoses, fuel lines, painted vacuum actuators, cleaned out radiator grill, repainted underside of the hood.........but she looks good.......

Oh, just ignore Joel - he picks his nose and that's why his car "pings." LOLLOLLOL  It's cool hangin' with the guys in this forum - that's what makes it so good! Thumbs%20Up

The guy broke the timing chain at 50K?  Wow, that's a thick chain too, have you seen it (it's cool old school)?  A 400 small block??  I don't think Chevy put a 400 SB in '70.  They were puttin' in 350ci/375hp, 350ci/350hp and the BB 454ci/390hp. Confused Do you have the Rochester Q-Jet or the Holley carb?  How's the interior?  I love the blue (my favorite)!  Is it Mulsanne Blue or Bridgehampton Blue?

I had a motor that had 11:1 compression.  I had to run 93 octane gas and add octane booster.  I had trouble finding a good octane booster.  The ones you buy off the shelf at most stores does very little to increase your octane.  Just read the label.  I found a product at a local speed parts shop that worked very well.  That was several years ago.  I don't remember the name of the product and the speed shop has closed.
I also could not run more than 28 degrees of total of timing.  I also ran 4 degrees less of initial timing than Comp Cams recommended.
You have gotten alot of good advise.  Just have someone adjust your timing until the ping is gone and run the best gas you can buy with the best octane booster you can find.  Enjoy your Vette!!
Good Luck,
Steve
