T0912CMJ

This is the number on the engine in a 1974 vette.

I am not sure it is the original engine. Anyone to tell me what engine it is ?

Check the pad on the front of the block just forward of the passenger side cylider head. It is a flat surface with numbers stamped in it. If it is the "original" engine the numbers will match the sequence number of the VIN.

The letter codes are application codes and should be on the deck with the VIN. I checked those codes and couldn't find a vette match

Not a 'Vette engine, for sure.
Most likely a truck engine.

Christian,

my 79 doesn't have the original engine.  Engine code is K1010 CMJ (same code that you mention).  According to Mortec site, it can be a 350 ci (in early 70s) or a 305 ci.  I tend to think that the engine in my Vette is a rebuilt engine because I had a Firebird 75 with a 350 ci 4bbl in it (between 79 and 85), and I can confirm that my Vette engine is extremely responsive and nervous, delivering accelerations extremely better than those I got with my Firebird.

I made some research with Google on the code CMJ, and I remember that in a discussion group on a site about engines, someone wrote that some engines in Corvettes were having that three letter code (but I cannot confirm...)  Is it possible that some crate engines had this 3-letter code ?

The "T" in the stamp code would indicate a big block, I believe. The Tonawanda plant built the big block engines. Is this a big block(454)???

I believe Adam's Apple and RoadRacine are right.

I think this engine is a 1974 Camaro 350 engine rated at 160HP and installed in Police cars.

Thanks. That's what I found out too: I believe the engine comes from a 1974 Police's Camaro.

There were no police Camaros in 1974. Pursuit package Camaros were introduced for police use in 1992 or 1993 and were produced through the 2002 model year.

The 1974 indication is not for Camaros but a 350 for full size police apps according to the information from Mr.Mako. In 1980, you could get the 305 in a full size or Camaro.

My guess on the T400 is that the police application came with a Turbo Hyrdromatic 400 trans.

My 2 cents.

The t400 means a turbohydromatic automatic transmission mated to a 350c.i.  engine for a fullsize sedan application, possibly a Caprice. GM had very a very small protion of the police market in 1974. Chysler had the majority of the police interceptor market.

According to my well worn Copy of the "Green Book"  ..
(the complete Chevy V8 Engine Code book  from 1955 thru 1985)

The CMJ code was used in 1974 for passanger cars ... rated at 160 Hp
all automatics, all 4 barrels...and also used in Police Cars

The same code was used in 1975 and 1976 models rated at 145 Hp
with 2 barrels and dropped into Passenger Cars, Monte Carlos and Chevelles

The code also was used in 1980 (305's) rated at 155 Hp ...also
listed as a passenger car engine,...

Only codes used in 1974 Corvettes were
ckz  cla clb clc cld clh clr cls cwm cwr cws or cwt

If your engine runs strong ..do you really care... ?   lol
