I have a quick question, hopefully for someone on line.

I just replaced the distributor in my 77 Vette with a new one from Jegs & I can set the timing by ear but the timing mark is nowhere near the pointer. And yes, I am clamped on #1.

Per the book, timing is supposed to be 8 BTDC. Is this with the vacuum connected or disconnected?

Thanks in advance, Tom

Always check base(idle)timing with the vac. dis-connected from the dist.
Perhaps your balancer isn't correct...the outer ring has slipped...

Joel may be dead on here.  I went thru the one on the car and two from Auto Zone before I got smart and picked up an AC/Delco OEM balancer that was dead on.  They are a pain to change, especially if you change it without taking the fan out.  Pulling the fan is definitely the easy way.

I thought of the balancer after sending out the email. I have the car timed by ear right now & it runs great. I'll pick up a vacuum gauge tomorrow & time the car by vacuum signal.

Thanks again, Tom
