What is acceptable compression for a big block ? or is it as long as all cyl are within 15% of the rest ? Mine has 180 across the board,  is this indicative of anything ? Just asking.
Thanks.

Pull the valve covers off and have someone turn it over while you watch the rocker arms for movement. Make sure you pull the coil wire so she won't start and remove the plugs to let it turn over easier, that way you can see if the plugs are wet with fuel or oil fouled.

Sounds like an exhaust lobe on the cam is flate. You won't know till you check it out.

Good luck, hope I'm wrong, it's Summertime, time to drive them, not work on them!!!

If your cam checks out alright as xfire mentioned to do. I would have to agree with Joel. I remember that most of the engines from that era were designed to run on "Leaded" gas. Which in turn the lead would lubricate the guides and prevent wear of the seats. And being that there hasn't been "Leaded" gas available for quite sometime, this would cause the issues you are now having with your car.

A few years ago I did come across a similair problem with an old GM engine doing the same thing. As it turned out the guides wore out from the lack of lead. The guy had all the guides and seats redone, and the problem when away.

This is an update on the 454 72 I spent 268$ to have the car gone through by an independent corvette apraiser  that i bought from cnv corvettes out of Tempe Arizona After odds and ends being fixed  said the car was perfect.Got it shipped home and drove it 18 miles noticed blue smoke and popping out of the carb . Have had A corvette shop pull the motor and tear it down.2 cracked exaust manifolds 2 different type heads wrong valve springs 5 lobes off the cam all the metal went through the bearings one cracked piston oil pan was smashed up then bondo on bottom then paintedover. needs 30 over bore and complete overhaul crank can be saved.big lesson ihave learned.Tom Flannery of Cnv corvetts said it was perfect when it left the dealership .So I guess i8 milesis about the lengthof a 454ls life.

DANG!!!!

I'm no eggs-spurt, but I think a dadgum 'ol big-block normally lasts a wee bit longer than 18 miles.

That sux a big blue one, Merle...
You gonna fix it anyway? Or you doing some legal work on it? Those guys sure should make it right for ya, imo.
Let us know what's happening.

I'm really interested in how it had 120-130lbs of compression with a flat cam on 5 lobes...somebody slid one by ya...Adams' Apple2007-06-25 21:14:50

I know it's no consolation, but it's easy to be taken advantage of when it's love at first sight. People prove it all the time bro.
