Vette(s): 1972 conv., sunfire yellow, blk interior, blk vinyl and convertible top. Off frame restoration with American Speed 383 stroker engine producing 500hp plus a 200hp NOS system. MSD ignition. Hooker super competition headers with chambered exhaust.
Check your block casting number again. I think the first digit is a "3", not a "9".
Jim , (rearn2go72) looks like we have another possilble member to the gas guzzling club.

hey guys, I was looking at the 383 crate engine to oput in that '76 I just picked up. Did any of you use one or did you build it yourselfs ? Was wasnting some input as well ...

is that the Edelbrock 383? that one looded good to me. I built my original motor so i don`t hve any feed back for you on the crates. the 383 is a real screamer. don`t expect much in the gas ecomnomy department though. good luck, keep us posted. why don`t you build the motor you have?

I don't have the mechanical ability to build an engine, so I got mine from here http://www.amerspeed.com/
American Speed isn't cheap but I like the fact that they blueprint and balance the engine, break in in on the dyno and then tear it back down to check everything before shipping. My engine was purchased in 2001 at a turn-key price of $7,992.00.
thanks guys for the feed back . Thats what I'm trying to figure out. Should I build the L-82 that came in it or is it better and or affordable to just buy a crate and then save the stock one. Was also thinking of puting the L-82 into my '81 and a crate into the '76 since I don't have the smog issues with it that I do with the '81.....SO HOW MUCH HORSEPOWER DOSE A C3 NEED TO HOLD ITS OWN , OR JUST HAVE HAVE FUN?
P.S - hope i'm not hijaking this thread

since the `81 motor is nothing special i would find a builder to build a 383 from it. Now you still have the matching block & heads. or change the headsand save the originals.
