Best to change the oil when it is hot or at least warm.
Use the strap wrench if needed.
Use an ice pick in the bottom of the filter to drain the oil before removing to minimize the mess.
Light film of oil on the gasket when installing the new filter.
Those were my techniques.
Now I have to admit, I take it to the local "quick change" place and watch.

I've used Fram filters on the family "fleet" for years but have switched to NAPA Gold series based on recommendations in a thread a while back here on the site. Occasionally I'll find one a little tough to get loose so I just reach for the strap wrench and be done with it.

I like the ice pick idea. That will work well on "The Toy" and "BIGBRRD" but the filter location on "The Beast" and the "Silver-Buckboard" will not allow it to be of any help. And until the warranty on the Outback expires the dealership will continue to monkey with that one.
Wix makes the NAPA gold filter I believe. Seems to be a well built filter.
Lube the gasket with "fresh" oil, not what drips out of the oil plug hole, then do not over tighten.
The Wix filter housing seems thicker to me, so the band type remover won't crush it as fast as other type filters.
