CAN A GAS SMELL IN THE OIL BE A DIRECT RESULT OF RUNNING A VERY RICH FUEL MIXTURE ?

You may have a leak in the fuel pump. I would check that out right away.

Both the rich mix and the fuel pump can cause the problem.  Of course the electric pump eliminates this in your car.  Also, if the choke stays on too long, or if the car is started several times and not allowed to fully warm up before shut down.

Be sure to check the PCV system.  It vents the crankcase.  If the PCV does not work, nothing vents the crankcase and the fumes build up.

In any event you want to cure this before you dilute the oil and cause engine damage.

Scott,

Are you using F.I. with the blower or a carb?

This happened to me, it was due to a leaky carb that bled out after every start.  I had it rebuilt & the wells capped with epoxy.

Anthony

using two holley 600's. I will replace the pcv valve and get a rebuilding kit for the carbs. I have had a rich problem since I purchased. Car was supossed to be checked by a mechanic, but you know how that goes. Thanks for your quick replies

When you mention capping the wells, please explain.

Also, these are not indexed carbs and I know that the power valves have been blocked off. Should I leave them blocked or replace the valves ? I am running a very modest boost.
Thanks

The wells in question are in the qudra jet carb.  You don't need to worry about them in the holly.  Just the kit and new floats.

update, I changed the two holleys for two edelbrocks and so far so good.
I think the holleys were bleeding gas down and fouling out the plugs.
I actually might even step down to a leaner setup.
