Have you checked to see if the float is stuck open in the carb?

My wife complains about "the smell" of the car everytime I pull it into the garage, or even just start it up. I'm sure it would be less offensive if I had the carb tuned a little better.
I do notice more of a gas odor in the garage after filling the tank though. But once the gas gauge needle starts to fall a little I don't notice it anymore.

On my '73 there's a fuel vent line connected to the top left corner of the tank with a check valve (I think) on it there too. The rubber vent line runs to a charcoal cannister up under the left fender. It's possible that the fuel vent line or some part of that system is leaking fumes. That is, if you have that system on your car. I don't know what year the charcoal cannister system started on.
Also, it is my understanding that some fuel caps were vented and some weren't depending on the year. If you have a nonvented cap on a system that requires one it seems that the tank could be building pressure and the fumes might possibly be escaping somewhere.
just some possibilities here...
good luck

I just got a 79 and after I filled it up the fumes were almost unbearable. My wife was following in another car and said that she could smell the fumes. She was following me to the shop. Should know soon what the issue is. I figure it might be a leak at the top of the tank as there were no fumes when the tank was less than full. We'll see. . .

Found the culprit. Due to limited hood clearance, air cleaner was hitting gasline into the carb, causing a fuel leak.
Glad to not be toasty.

i had a gas smell in my 72. i found that the gas cap had no gasket. i bought a new cap with a new gasket figuring that was the problem . the gas smell didn't go away, so i figured i might have a line leaking from the tank. i dropped the spare tire cover and removed the upper tire cover. i found a tiny pin hole in the tank under the tank support. i guess from rubbing for 30 years it developed a leak even though there is felt between the tank and the support. the felt was wet with gas which is just above the muffler. i glad i found it before i had a major fire.

I had this same problem on my '71. It turned out to be the paper "filler neck seal" between the filler neck and the tank. You have to move the rubber filler neck boot to get access to the 9 screws that holds down the neck. It was a very cheap and easy fix.

Sam,
Correct your image URL in your signature box to this and your pic should up: http://www.c3vetteregistry.com/member_uploads/201_300/276/C3VR_20002.jpg

(btw - you have mail.)
I had to flip a coin to decide on going after a blue or red roadster - great looking ride!
And thanks for the tip on the gasket. I'll have to check that to see if it stops the gas smell coming from "The Toy".
