Vette(s): 1971 T-top. I just had car shipped from my parents house in florida where it has sat for over 12 years..It is going to be a long project!
Everyday a different problem...well today I finished putting on timing cover and started on harmonic balancer/torsion damper. It seemed to go on pretty easy at first, a couple of taps with a rubber hammer, then but bolt and washer on and used wrench to "push" on until it stopped moving and engine started turning.
My question is how can you tell it is all the way on. The book states until it is flush with crank stop...well i cant see that.. but there is still some space in front of damper when looking in hole where crank is...is there spose to be about an inch on this side...it just doesnt want to go any more... I did put on crank pulley and water pump pulley and they seem to line up..If it went in another inch it does not seem like this would line up....
Thanks again!!
Ron

dont know if this is the case for all but on mine it didn't get quite flush but pretty close..
(corrected did to didnt) and pretty close was about 3/16" off
did you torque the bolt to the proper spec ?
60 for SB
85 for BB

It may be different on 'original' equipment, but on my last two engine swaps, the damper is not flush with the end of the crank. Depending on the damper style and size, one had about an inch, the other about 3/4 inch short of flush. Be sure the key has not slipped inward and is stopping the damper. The damper should move easily and the end of travel will be abrupt and evident. If the pullies line up and you have the bolt torqued correctly, consider it correct.
