It's been a quite awhile since I've dove into an engine this far, so I could use a little advice on the above. I'm in the process of a cam upgrade on my 72 LS-5 BB. In attempting to remove the balancer, I've managed to strip the threads out of an old puller I borrowed from a buddy. I just got back from Advanced Auto parts with a loaner puller, which looks to be about the same general construction as the I broke.

Since I'm about to be snowed in here in NW NJ, I have some time to do this, Would a little heat applied at the crank snout / balancer junction be a bad thing, as long asd the temp of the metal next to the rubber isolator doesn't get too hot??

TIA

Heat is a last resort. The chance of damage is just too great. But sometimes it's the only way, then you should replace the balancer and crank seal. Unless you are sure.

However, you probably don't need it. Us high pressure lube on the threads of the puller. Same stuff used when installing the lifters and cam. This allow you to pull MUCH more without hurting the threads. Once you have tension on the puller, you can tap on the balancer center hub (not the outer edge past the rubber) and on the puller bolt. The extra vibration can make a difference. With these two tricks, it should come off.

A STUPID Question?
Did you remove the bolt that goes into the crank? |headscratch| |headscratch| |headscratch|

First, there are no stupid questions.
Yeah, the air gun made short work of the bolt.

I tried a little vibration, with no luck.

I'll try a little more.

Thanks for the ideas.

Just a quick follow-up. I gently tapped on the installed puller while spraying some Kroil penetrating oil I was given at work. Balancer pulled right off. Kroil is amazing stuff. Can be found at some Industrial Supply houses, and at a number of places on the net.

Thanks again for the ideas.

I let one of our cousins kid use my shop and tools to pull his engine apart and he was a graduate from UTI. He stripped my puller trying to pull the balancer with the bolt still in it. |headscratch|
