Well after thinking about it ever since I rebiult the motor, more then a few years ago, I did it.

I am not sure why I didn't buy a new one when I was doing the rebuild but I didn't. So here it is a few years later and I finally did. Hopefully I will not have that small leak up front any more.

Getting the old one off was the easy part. Once I removed the fan and belts there was more then enough room to get my impact gun on the center bolt to remove it. Then I used my puller and a socket wrench to pull the balancer off. I then lifted the front of the car up and cleaned the motor and surrounding area of the oil and  dirt. Next I played around with a couple of different sizes of screw drivers until  found one that poped the old front seal out. Then I taped the new seal in place and set the new balancer onto the shaft. I do not own a installer tool and my friend that does was not home so back to the autoparts store I went to get one. Crap, you want $36 to rent one. No thanks I can find a better way. I ended up buying two slightly longer bolts and a couple thick washers. I screwed the 3" long bolt and a 1/4" thick washer and used the impact wrench to draw the balancer in about an 1". Then I used the 2 1/2" bolt and washer and repeated. Then I added a second washer and finshed the job. I then installed the correct bolt, 2 1/4" long, and washer and checked my belt alignments; finished putting the belts and fan back on and I was done. All-in-all it took me about two ours.

On to the next project. I love spring.

Does your old dampener(balancer) have a groove in it from the seal?

Brian, What was the diameter of the balancer ? I've got 6 3/4" and 8" on different motors.

Yes there is a groove on the seal area.

My engine was the L-48 so it has the 6 3/4" one. The L-82 used the 8".
