What does the repair kit do for the harmonic balancer?   The rubber is coming out of mine and looking pretty dry rotted. Should I REPAIR it or replace it?  I am going through the engine now and cleaning it up. The cam and pistons will be up graded as will the bore. Should I go with a PERFORMANCE balancer or the OEM one?  NO high HP planned just a up grade.  THANKS   Mark

I'm not aware of any "repair kit" for the actual balancer, as far as re-doing the bonded rubber ring.
There is a repair kit that installs over the balancer hub, if the hub has a groove in it from the seal, and is leaking. This is just a thin, stainless steel sleeve that is driven/pressed down on the hub, to give the hub a smooth surface for the seal to ride on, so it won't leak.
You can go with a stock type balancer and be fine, if ya want. For more protection, you could get one of the aftermarket HP ones, but unless you really plan on winding it up a lot, it's not really a necessity.

I agree completely.  And the first thing I though of when you said repair kit was the hub sleeve Joel described.  Aftermarket balancers become more important the higher you rev the engine past 6,000 RPM.

All I have to say Mark is get it done now. If that pup let's go it could get real ugly!! When I did mine it was just barely holding together. I'm sure you don't want to have to buy a hood, etc. "T" my7T12010-03-16 19:22:12

Clap   O.K.  Gents, LOTS of good info here. MUCH appreciate the input.  The sleeve makes sense, I can see the benefit to it. I will getting a new balancer and bolt and save the headaches later. THANKS to ya all.   Mark

Well, Marks question was just in time!!  I am seeing the same think on my 81.  Guess that I'll get a new one before the meet in Holland.  I have been wondering just how long I could go before I had to replace the balencer.

A replacement oem balancer is definitely a small price to pay for piece of mind. I recall seeing OEM replacements on fleabay for $50-$60.

I replaced mine last spring. For the cost, it is well worth the piece of mind.
