Was wondering Who made the best header for the buck out there. Saw a set of Hookers that are new on ebay for a 70's vette. I know fit is a thing to watch for too. Should I use ceramic coated, Painted or chrome? And what about header wrapping (insulation)? Thanks |wavey|

Ceramic coated is the way to go. Costs more, but pays itself back long term. Painted headers will rust quickly and look bad and begin leaking. Chrome is OK for a street rod where they're out for all to see. Even with ceramic coating, you may still want a heat shield or wrap around your starter.

I started installing a set of ceramic coated "FlowTech" by Holley headers that I scored on ebay ($247) on the vette tonight.
So far so good. I got the driver side mounted to the engine. What a PITA! Tomorrow night I'll mount the passenger side. Fun Wow! Not! Then I have a feeling that that the pipes will have to be tweaked at a muffler shop to get them to line up with the collectors.

BTW, during the install of the drivers side, I found a couple suprizes: A cracked Z-bar bracket, and the spark plugs that the parts jockey sold me 3yrs ago for the engine where the wrong ones. My vortec heads have a longer set of threads than the old style SB heads. That was fun trying to clean the carbon off the rest of the threads and index the new plugs.
Good luck! Sarge |hammer|

Yea I think I saw the flow techs on e bay also for the same price. I emailed them and they said I would need a different a/c bracket for something like 22 bucks. It may be somewhat easier when I put mine on. I am pulling the orig. L48 and either going to a 355 or 383 not sure yet. I am in the process of buying parts right now got the intake, carb, heads, aluminum finned valve covers, right now deciding on the crank. I will probably go with the 355!?!?! |headscratch| |wavey| Thanks for the info!
