Gee...no-one's gonna give this one a shot?
Sorry, mikeee
...we'll see if we can come up with a good alternative the the heads you have now.
What do you plan on doing with the car? Hot-rodding, racing, cruizin?
Are there any other mods already done to the engine, or are you planning on any in the future? Headers, cam swaps, intake/carb changes? The more info we have on your intentions, the better the info will be...

There's lots of different cylinder heads available...it depends on how you plan on using the car to get the best recommendation. Call Summit Racing or Jeg's and ask their techs. They'll give you some very good options to match all your components for best performance. There are good cylinder heads from GM Performance as well as aftermarket suppliers that will fit your needs.
Thanks Gunslinger,It's the casting info I'm looking for.A freind has 100's of SB heads for me,but we don't know the head I'm looking for w/out the help from guys like you.Don't want aftermarket when I have free heads available to me,just have to ID the GM heads I need(smaller chamber)

There is that information available...both in books and on-line. I don't have that information, but there are what's referred to as single and double hump heads (referring to casting marks) as well as casting numbers. It will take a bit of research, but as I said, the info is available.
Do a web search and see what you can come up with. Lots of Chevy forums and sources out there.

Now another freind is talking me into Vortec/GM heads.Says the money is right because they come completly assembled. No machine work,no valve work, etc. Probably cheaper in the long run AND he says"they flow better"
One caution on the Vortec heads... I put Edelbrock vortec "E-Tec 170" heads on my newly rebuild Vette engine last winter. I was told the engine must be fully broken-in before installing new headers with ceramic coating, or the exhaust would be so hot that it would burn the coating right off. So, I have waited 700 miles so far and I'm now ready for the headers. Now here's the problem: The vortec heads have a D-shaped exhaust port, plus Vettes have little room for headers, so if they are full-length, they need to be designed specifically to fit a Vette from your era. However, no one currently makes such a header. Some have put regular non-vortec specific header on such heads and reported good results, but myself, I want to ensure the header flange is a good match to the head port shape, for maximum efficiency and HP. Or you can order "shorty" headers designed for vortec heads. Doug Thorley Headers is supposed to be coming out with these this month (October '06) and I'll probably go that route. I have only seen them from one other manufacturer - "Street and Performance" I believe. Also, if you happen to go the full-length header approach, you have one more problem: The exhaust ports are about 1/4 higher on the head than on a std. head. So, I've read that some of the longer full-length headers have clearance problems with the floor pan. However, I know some brnads work. Darryl (Sarge81) has full-lengths on his '81 that fit fine. I believe they are Flowtech specifically designed for for the years surrounding his '81. I just haven't gone that route yet as I'd like the perfect match of headers made just for Vortec heads...

Vette(s): 1972 conv., sunfire yellow, blk interior, blk vinyl and convertible top. Off frame restoration with American Speed 383 stroker engine producing 500hp plus a 200hp NOS system. MSD ignition. Hooker super competition headers with chambered exhaust.
I was well pleased with the vortec heads I put on my 66. Of course I didn't have headers, just sidepipes.
Jeg's was very helpful in suggesting the correct aluminum intake and cam for maximum torque.
