I am ordering a new HEI distributor to replace my stock HEI on a 1976 L48.
The new unit produces a 45,000 volt spark.
Does anyone know what the volt spark is on the stock distributor?

40,000 volts with the standard HEI.
The advantage is not the voltage, that's trivial. But instead the MSD creates a much longer spark duration that allows the fuel to better light in the cylinder.
With my 75 on a dyno, the exhaust would burn your eyes. With the MSD installed the same dyno test, the exhaust was clean, and breathing was easy. It did not improve power at that point, but that was due to the engine limitations. With more mods to the engine I am sure the MSD was part of the answer.
MSD stands for Multiple Spark Discharge. What it does instead of just one continous spark, it fires the plug, stops the spark,and fires it again. At low rpm it may do this up to 5 or 6 times. As the rpm increases the number of times decreases due to the fact the cylinders must fire much closer together and in a shorter time span.

That is the distributor I use and the MSD 6 comes with all you need to hook it up to the HEI system.

Just a heads up;
I went with the Mallory on my '79 last spring and I'm dissapointed as heck with it!
I have had to replace the ignition module on it twice after a grand total of 2,000 miles.
I'm going to spend the big bucks on the MSD as soon as I'm able to.

Same here too! Same happened to me. So I took that crappy puppy off and stuck the original distributor back on with Pertronics. Works PERFECT now and NO PROBLEMS.
Just my 2 pennies worth..

I installed an MSD with the Sparkbox on my '81. Never had any problems so far. I installed the sparkbox out of sight in order to keep as much of the stock look as possible.
