Vette(s): 1981 Frost Beige Coupe... all original.. My SECOND Love...

I'm upgrading my cap, rotor and coil to handle a higher voltage.  I have already done wires and plugs.  My question is this:

Do I have to change out the HEI module in the distributor with one that is rated for the higher voltage, or can I retain the stock unit.  This is a 1981 HEI with the 7 pin HEI module.

Thanks!

Carl

What does the coil mfg. recommend? I would think it would be a good idea, but I doubt that you 'have to'. Now would be the time, tho. The module controls the saturation time of the coil, so a newer mod. that is compatable with the coil will be better, I think. Can you check with the coil mfg. for info on what would be best?

Yes to take advantage of a hotter coil, you need a longer dwell time for the coil to build energy and a module that can release that energy.

That's what I thought.  I ordered an Accel module from Summit.  Thanks for the advice!

you should buy your module and coil as a set, like a pair of shoes, don't try to mix and match brands and manufacturers, some don't work well with others
