Vette(s): Black on black 77
Can anyone help me? I am a Corvete Owner From England. I have a 1977 Corvette and need to get parts for the engine. it should be a L48 but I assume this has been changed over the years but to what? on the log bok it states the engine is a 5.2 liter which equals 317 cubic inch, but I can't fnd that size engine on any year corvette in the Corvette Black Book.
The ENGINE NUMBER is:- MA 25800
If anyone can shed some light on this your help would be greatly appreciated.
It was imported into England from California.

Thanks in advance
Chris

My understanding is that a 1977 Calif. Vette would have had a 305 5.0 Litre motor in it due to stricter emissions, but 317 5.2 I've never heard of. Could it be that the motor was "improved" bored x over or different stroke resulting in higher capacity than the factory 305?

Ideas, but no solutions.

If your engine is indeed a small block chevy, it is most likely to be a 5.7 liter, 350 cid. It would make no sense for any one to swap in any thing smaller than that. I dont think GM even made a 5.2 liter. I dont know how to interpret your numbers but, where did you pull this number from? You can see your cast number on the drivers side (left side if your is a right hand drive car), just behind the back of the cylinder head. That should definitly indicate what kind of engine you got if you tell us what it says. mine says 3970010, also on the front of the passenger side cylinder head has some numbers to help determine if your numbers match with you vin. Hope this helps good luck! -Tom

Tumarr is right - stock block for '77 is 3970010 all the way.

305 didn't show up until 1980 model. The Corvette 305 optional block will carry casting number 14016381.

Vette(s): 1975 C3 Red, T-Tops, Black Interior. All I need is time and money! Getting there!
And the 305 is a 5.0 liter, the 5.2 is a Chrysler 318
