I just got my vette last October. I took it out a few times and it would stall often, especially if I stepped on it a bit. I figured it was not getting enough gas. Over the winter I changed the fuel pump, intake, carb, fuel filter, fuel sender strainer, spark plugs etc. It was running fine in the shop. I took it out yesterday and the same thing. It would stall. I got it going again (not easily) and would put it in drive and 6 feet later it would stall again. Any thoughts or help would be greatly appreciated. |headscratch|

1.check the acceleration pump. look down the carb and move the linkage back, you should see 2 jets of fuel being shot down the carb. 2. check for a vacumm leak 3. check engine timing retarded timing will also cause this. but its most likely the carb. also check and be sure your choke is working.

Check your positif wire ( red ) on your starter it could be split or crack and also the ground of the engine.

This sounds like a intake manifold leak. Not uncommon for someone to make this mistake. If you don't get it sealed correctly you will have a leak. Typically the engine will run fine while in the shop, but as soon as you put a load on the engine it will dye. Most of the time dropping it into gear will not kill its when you start to drive off and the load builds.

Now the other thing that I've seen happen a bunch of times is the distributor not reinstalled correctly. It could be off a tooth or two or even be installed 180 degrees out. A tooth or two and it will run, but be hard to start and it try driving off and it advances so far it kills it. 180 degrees out and the engine wont run. If you rmoved the plug wires make sure they are on the correct cylinders. And if it has a vacuum advance make sure its on the correct vacuum port of the carb.

to test intake manifold for leakage ,try covering the carb while the engine is idling. it should stall if not intake manifold is leaking

I've heard that a shot of carb cleaner near a leak will cause the idle to jump up. Just spray the carb cleaner along the edge of the intake and if the idle increase you've found your leak. BUT, be careful, carb cleaner can remove paint if you use too much.

It does sound like a carb problem though, most likely the accelerator pump.

Good luck!!!

SOUNDS LIKE YOU MAY HAVE VAPOR LOCK IN YOUR FUEL LINE. MAKE SURE THAT IT IS NOT RESTING ON YOUR VALVE COVER OR YOUR INTAKE MANIFOLD. AS YOUR FUEL LINE HEATS UP THE FUEL ACTUALLY VAPORIZES AND CAUSES BACKPRESSURE THAT DOES NOT ALLOW ANY MORE FUEL TO PASS AND SO YOUR MOTOR IS STARVED OF FUEL AND STALLS. - JUST A THOUGHT. |idea|

many carb cleaners don't work as well as they used to for finding leaks. epa has made them change their formula, first spray some down the carb to see if it increases rpm first. if it does then you can try it foe finding vacuum leaks

You can also use a propane torch (unlit) to check for vacuum leaks w/o paint worries.

I have a 76, and have the same problem with the engine
stalling. It idles fine but after driving for a bit it acts like it is running out of gas, when you pull over to the side of the road it runs fine but you cannot pull off under it's own power. There is no rhyme or reason to when it happens, cold days, hot days, 6-7 days
with no problem or four days in a row with a problem every day, sometimes after a couple of miles and sometimes after a hundred or more.I have removed the gas tank, cleaned out the gas lines, replaced the fuel pump and the gas filter. I have to think now it is the quadrajet or the fuel return line??? All the vacuum lines are good and connected correctly. ANY advice would be appreciated. Thanks . |headscratch|
