Today, as the wife and I were leaving for a long (1,000+ miles) trip in my '74, we could hear a clicking/ticking noise coming from the dashboard.

Before we got too far, I got out and looked under the hood.  Eventually, I determined that it sounded (and felt) like it was coming from the distributor.  We debated for a few moments, and decided to risk it.

After not too long, we didn't hear it, and the car ran fine all afternoon (it did get hot once - see below).

Any ideas on what this could have been?  I was somewhat afraid that this might cause us trouble on the road, but everything's good so far.

As for the temperature issue, it did get hot once, but cooled down after we got moving.  On the '74, is there supposed to be a tube coming off of the overflow cap to go down in the resevoir?  I can't remember, but when I checked it, I would think that it would be virtually impossible (other than by vacuum) to get water out of the resevoir and into the radiator without one.

Thanks in advance for the help folks!!

Do you have a mechanical tachometer? If so, unhook the cable and see if the noise stops. Could just be the cable. Redwingvette2008-05-18 17:15:16

Yeah...proll the tach cable tickin, or worse case the tach itself. Take the cable loose and lube it up. Sounds a lot easier than it is!

There should indeed be a section of hose on the overflow for the pull-back into the radiator. It may have fallen down in the tank...it happens.

I can't put into words how great this place is.  I'm almost 200 miles from home and can still feel perfectly comfortable driving my 34 year old car.

Thanks guys so much!!
