Topic: high horsepower engine kit...streetable?
in Forum: C3 Engines

Found a kit that suits my needs, coupled with a 383. The numbers look pretty. However, with the duration/lift of the cam, seems to me like it might require a huge stall converter, and not be at all streetable. Opinions?
If that doesn't work, go to summit racing and search for "500 hp", it's the trick flow kit.

I agree strokers and even superchargers take away the effect of a large cam with lots of lift and duration. But If I'm looking at the right kit with the 246/254 @ 050 thats a huge cam even for a 383. Thats bigger then our largest cam profile in our new Voodoo line. So its going to have a rpm power range in the 3000 to 6800 rpms. My opinion is your going to need a 3500 stall to make that combo work.
My recommendation is if you want to make 500 HP then I would go with a hyd roller or solid roller can. This way you can make more power with a smaller cam with more aggressive ramp because of the roller design.
Another option is to go with a big inch small block. Something from world products or build your own. I have done several 418 and 427 small blocks with mild hyd roller cams that have all idled like kittens. Around 800 rpms and made 500+ HP and 500+ lb ft. on 9.5 compression. The latest combination I put together will be coming out in Super Chevy called Major Mouse. I'll try and let you know which issue it is.

We're looking at the 383, though a 427 would be fun. Whatever I get, I want it to idle like a kitten, and roar like a tiger. My engine guy was thinking we'd need a 3500 stall converter for that application, and he said it wouldn't have the kind of streetable application I was looking for. I want to put about 400-450 horsepower down to the ground. I'm using the 700R4 transmission and hooker super competition headers and sidepipes.
The camshaft in that kit is a hydraulic roller.
Using the kit in conjunction with that kit, and some lifters, is an idea, I just don't want the car to idle like a monster, and not be streetable, and some low-end torque would be nice.
My only thought is that someday I want to go with electronic fuel injection, and either a custom twin turbo system or a procharger, and aim for like 650 hp to the rear wheels. I can put in some different pistons maybe and try to lower the compression when I decide to do forced induction.
One of the biggest pros of these two kits is that they're fairly inexpensive to reach the kind of numbers I want. Roughly 4 grand for parts, plus the labor and I have an engine. My absolute biggest concern is that it won't be streetable.
One of those engines that aftershark mentioned, the 427s that idle at 800 on 9.5 compression sound pretty nice, and I'd like to look at a few of those. But...cost.
There's also a 427 rotating assemblies kit from World Products on summit too.

i concur with tom and matt.. that cam isnt streetable..
if you want to use something that big.. youll need to use an electric vacuum pump to run your accessories/brakes..
