Hot air is expanded air. There are not as many molocules per cubic foot. So with less air entering the engine, there is less power. Cooler air is better for producing power. Very cold air does not allow fuel to burn as well, so there is a point where too cold is not good. Below freezing is not as good.

The original factory air intake control kept air temp at about 110 degrees. It does this by blending intake cold air with hot air from the exhaust manifold stoves.
At wide open with cowl induction units, the outside temp added a bit more power by increasing air pressure when the car was moving fast enough, and by using cooler, denser air.

But sometimes the air intakes restrict air flow, so there is less power. It's a balancing act. Some of the after market low restriction cool air intakes work very well.

this is the theory ( or more properly... reality) behind the edelbrock air-gap intakes as well..

help keep the actual intake air cooler..

too bad they wont fit under a small block hood.. |ohwell|
