The starter went out in my '69 (350 auto). I went to all the auto parts stores around here and could not find a replacement. Mine has a steel nose, all the stores carried one with an aluminum snout that would not fit. I was told mine was "rare". I would like to install a high torque mini starter, anyone know where I can find one for my "rare" application?
Thanks,
Matt

The high torque mini-starters are supposed to fit most any small block Chevy. Summit Racing and Jegs sells them as do some of the restoration houses. They defintely save weight and due to their smaller size are somewhat more insulated from heat. Unless you have a torque monster of an engine with very high compression, I don't see any great advantage to them, but there's certainly nothing wrong with using one.
You can also have your current starter rebuilt by a competent rebuilder. That will solve your installation issues without question. It will likely be significantly less expensive than buying a mini-starter.

do you know if they have one for a BB??
it would be nice to have more room between the block and the headers

Check the application guides. Some suppliers have high torque starters that fit both small and big blocks, some don't say one way or the other.
