Vette(s): 1974 T-top 454/400 auto w/delux interior, power windows, white w/black int.,American Racing mags w/Goodyear tires. previously owned... 1969 convertible - 427/390 auto w/hardtop 1965 coupe - 327/300 4 spd
WOW! Thanks guys for all that info. July 24th eh! Where would I find the casting date?I agree with Ben that it seems to be a 1980 350/155hp. There has been some goodies added to the outside of the engine, so wonder if there has been anything done to the inside. Starts & idles fine so don't expect a radical cam. Still wonder why 2 rows of numbers stamped on the block.
Will still pull the pan & check main bolts at some point.
Now the big question:do I tear this engine down and make it go faster, or try & find a date code 454 to put the car back as close to origional as possible? (or leave it alone and just enjoy)
Thanks again guys. That was really fast.

you guys are unbelievable! |thumb|

this is the greatest vette site in the world.

Snoopy, I would just have fun if that's what you bought the car for. I have a numbers matching 71 coupe but not the right colours, so I'm going to enjoy it until it's time to strip it down and rebuild.

I don't like the idea of 155hp though in a vette. You need something substantial to get the right feel as it was meant to be. |headscratch| |cheers|

there is no point in a casting number/date matching engine.. the vin will never match ...

tear it down and build something a little more fun..

or just get a new gm HP crate.

here is an article that will show you the number locations

I think he has a good block to start with, I wouldn't be surprised if the engine hasn't already been worked a bit. If it's in good shape and passes a compression test, maybe just slip a better cam and intake in and see what happens!

Already has an Edelbrock intake and Holley 600cfm carb. Compression ranges from 180 to 200. It doesn't feel like 155 hp. It will spin the tires (auto trans). The trouble with more power is do you ever have enough?(not according to Tim the tool man).

Enough power he asks? I really don't know how much is enough! My engine guy tells me mine should make 500 hp at the flywheel and 400 at the wheels, enough? maybe maybe not! |bouncy|
