I have completed an engine over haul.  The engine is back in the car.  It starts and I was able to get it timed.  I do however have a couple of issues.

The first is valve set.  I first tried the one turn past zero lash.  The valves were still noisy.  I than tried the running process ( 1/4 turn after no clicking ).  The issue is that I still hear a little tappet noise.   Did I just not go down enough?

The second issue is a loud squill on hard acceleration.  I checked the alternator.  I tried the typlical -  new belt, no alternator bearing issue.  What I did do was remove the fan and viscous clutch.  Without the fan and clutch - no squill.  I happen to have another viscous clutch that spun a little easier. so I put it on.  The situation improved, but still under real hard acceleration the thing squills.  Any ideas?

Thanks

Tom

Sounds like the water pump belt is the culprit on the squeal noise. Check all of the belts that go around the wp pulley. Also, make sure all of the belts are the correct size, section-wise(thickness). They should fit into the grooves almost level...not down into the grooves too far.

The valve adjustment you made sounds correct, but you may have some lifters that are not pumping up, or may be bad. You may want to go a half-turn past with it running.
Are you sure it's a lifter noise, and not an exhaust leak? An exhaust leak at the manifold can sound like lifter noise.

I just finished the work on my 76 that I needed to do before driving it for the first time. While I was test driving it I had a problem in that the lifter noise appeared out of nowhere. It was running great until that and I pulled over. The tapping continued as I limped home. The engine seemed to run fine with the oil pressure at 40 pounds and coolent temp a 190 degrees. I noticed exhaust smoke coming up from the right hand manifold like an oil leak on a hot manifold. I checked the oil and it was full and then removed the valve covers and inspect the lifters and springs but found not visible signs of any problems. Do you think it is the manifold leaking as you said??

Well I found the source of my two issues.  I spent an hour at Napa looking at belt widths.  I finally found one that rode properly inn the water pump pulley.  Once installed the squeal went away.

I tried to tighten left side exhaust bolts and the striped the brass nuts.  I replaced the nuts with steel and got a lot more torque on the flange.  The valve tapping disappeared.

Thanks Joel.

Carl, Don't know exactly what your issue my be, but a leaking valve cover and a leaking exhaust could be a possiblility.  Let us know what you findout.

Glad to help, Thomas.

Carl, if you have smoke coming from the manifold that looks like oil burning, that's probably what it is. Check those VC gaskets. Some of the cork gaskets these days are not made in one piece, but rather they are "glued" together in one spot, usually around a corner. For some reason, they have a tendency to leak right there...go figure... I've made it a habit when I get stuck with a gasket like this to put the "glued together" section at the top of the head, and not the bottom.
Also, if you have replaced the gaskets recently, make sure there are no leftover pieces of the old gasket on the head, or the VC.Adams' Apple2007-06-04 19:36:11
