Hi guys.....

I drew up this diagram... I am a bit confused as to why Chevy connected the left exhaust to the right! Won’t that provide some kick back to the car, limiting its power?

Thanks
-Louis

Louis,

Chevy changed from true dual exhaust to a "Y" pipe in 1975 (the year of my vette) the reason you see the hole for the exhaust is that the frame didn't change, just the exhaust.

That was the year when they added the emission controls and all that stuff. Your right it does add more power without the "Y" pipe. My state doesn't require that any car older than 25 years pass the emission test, so I took all my stuff off, and put dual exhaust on.

That's true...in '75 when Chevy went to catalytic converters for emission control, they found they were unable to get two smaller converters in a dual exhaust to function to the government mandated emissions endurance standards and had to go to a large single converter in a single exhaust. They split the system into two mufflers for the appearance of dual exhaust. Combine the technology of the day with the bean counters wanting costs kept down and it's easy to see why Chevy took the route they did.

As said, unless your state forbids it after 25 years, go ahead and put a true dual exhaust on your car...I did on my '78 and it runs better.

At some point, my 75 will gain the 74 dual exhaust. The converter is gone now. It has one of those test pipes in place of the converter. And it's cracked.

Yeha... I figured I could add the dual exhaust. But one question... Why did Chevy rob all the power out of the Vette? I mean they put a Cat on the exhaust, made the exhaust a Y- pipe design, put an emissions pup on, EGR valve. I mean you’re just turning the Vette into an economy car at that point. The ricers weren't giving my car respect because they seemed to believe the stock specs Chevy put out. Chevy only put those specs out so people would buy the car more, because that meant lower insurance rates; Sneaky bastages, eh? The actual horse power I've seen on dynos when the car was stock was a max of 195HP, and 320 FT/LBS torque. But that’s with the Y-PIPE exhaust, emissions pump, EGR valve, etc.... If you take all that crap off, I bet he HP would be in the low 200's possibly even mid, and the torque would also greatly increases ;)

It was done to the Vette for the same reason it was done to every other car in those years. Federal Emissions Regulations.

1975 is when it hit rock bottom, then started creeping back up.

That was the best they could do at the time, with the technology and knowledge they had. We have learned much from that time.
