My car does not have the ignition shield (distributor shield) in place, and I'm wondering what kind it had in 1972. In looking a photos of engines on google, I see that there is a ignition top shield, but I don't see any with the vertical shields and the spark plug shields. What was offered in 1972?? It appears to me that it was just the top shield, and not the side ones. Is that correct?

No, that is not correct.  The distributor has a shield on top as well down (towards the manifold) front and back. One piece.  There are also shields covering the spark plug wires coming out the sides (left and right). Two pieces.  I'm sure the major suppliers have them in the catalogs. Hope this helps.Wink

Thanks Dean. I see that the piece covering the top and back is one item, and that the ones on either side are separate. I just didn't know if the side pieces came that way from the factory or were later ad-ons.

What about the pieces that attach to the manifold to cover the spark plug wires? Does your vette have those?

Bryan,
Yes, mine has the side shields that cover the spark plug wires, and they came that way from the factory.  I forgot to mention that there are two brackets painted orange that the shields attach to that hold the whole thing together.  Nice looking blue 72 Convert!!Thumbs%20Up

Vette(s): Silver 1974 Convertible - L82 4 speed Low miles (was only 8,900 when I bought it in March 2006) - Now 54K miles. Original owner bought it as an investment for son's college expenses. 2008 Jetstream Blue Convertible
PO's probably removed the shielding for the PItA factor.   When I had a tune up done on my 74, the guy said that to do it to factory specs, he'd have to hoist the engine up a little to run the wires under it.  I was spending too much at the time on the car as it was, so I passed on that extra expense.

He gave me all the shielding.  The distributor cover stayed on, and I recently put the side pieces back on though the wires don't really run through them - they're just for show mainly now.  The plug shields are in a box with other original parts in my garage.

I wanted a Corvette my whole life, but I never dreamed of all the wonderful people I would meet because of it!

Vette(s): 1978 Silver Anniversary L82 4-speed, close ratio 07M Paint code. Former owner painted it incorrectly. Not bad paint, but will paint it the RIGHT way down the road.
One question.
Are they really needed?
I am going to swap my motor for a "worked" 350/ .030 over.
Once the snow flies!

Was thinking of NOT putting them back on..
any opinions?

They were originally put on for radio static suppression.  I suspect that with modern technology in wires and radios, you will not even notice the difference.  But I think they are pretty sexy.

Great thanks Larry.
All new wires and goodies once we drop it in.
so prob. just leave them off.
easier to deal with if I have to mess with the wires down the road.

can't wait!

I took mine off, but I plan on putting the distributor cover and the two side wirecovers.  I'm not putting the spark plug shields back on.
