Vette(s): Coupe 74 - 454 Drive it like you stole it!
I am getting ready (shopping) to re-gasket most of the engine in a week or two (vacation plan), and I got puzzled by the intake manifold gasket.

I have the original intake on a 74 big block.

The question is : square or round ports ?  I believe it's round, but some websites have both of them for sale with little or no description.

And if you are curious (I feel like sharing anyway); here's my list so far of things I need to fix all the leaks, cooling problem and fuel smell :

-vapor filter cannister
-upper & lower radiator hose
-radiator cap
-oil pan gasket and plug gasket
-transmission filter & gasket
-Q_Jet airhorn gasket
-carb base gasket
-valve cover gaskets
-head gaskets

As I remove some of the hoses, I will do a better inspection on them and replace the dried/cracked ones.

Do you guy's think I missed a gasket somewhere ? (The one for the distributor comes with the intake gasket.)

As you can see, it will be a busy week.  When removing the heads, I figured I will have to move part of the A/C and brake system.  I will most likely replace the headers (already have the new one's, so now would be a good time...).  I also have to tighten the power steering belt.  Since I know it will take me more than 5 hours (most likely 5 days), I will most likely remove the hood.

I will have a detailed plan (ordered checklist) before I start, have all the tools ready and a labeling system.  I will post my plan on another post later with some other questions I already have.

I believe your heads will have oval ports. As far as I know, only the higher compression heads used on the 427's (and maybe certain 454's) had the rectangular ports. That would include the L71's, L88's and L89. They are all solid lifter engines as well. I don't think the rectangular ports were used from the factory after compression ratios were lowered in '71.

Your 454 will absolutely have oval ports, unless someone has changed the heads/intake before.
Why head gaskets?
