Hello, Its been awhile since I have been on C3VR. I Just renewed my Gold Membership. Hope someone can help me out here. I am building a 383 for my 73 with stock hood. And want to keep it that way. I have been told that a High Rise Manifold wont work without hood  clearance problems. But I was told you can use a high rise if you use a drop base air cleaner. I wont be using the chrome cover for the Distributor. Will be using a Speed Demon 650 Carb. I do have a new MSD Corvette Distributor if this makes a difference. Thanks!

Hey Silver 73. I am interested in this topic too as I am getting ready to put on an Eddlebrock performer aluminum intake. I wondered if I would have clearance problems with my hood and air cleaner unit.

Watching for further replys!

Hi Guys, I just got out my reciepts and checked numbers of the Edelbrock intake manifold that I have on my 79. The one that works is a low rise, Edelbrock # EDE 2101. Got it a PAW in So. Ca., so the EDE part may be a PAW prefix. I am running an Edelbrock 1406 carb, with a K&N air filter, # E1500. I had tried a 7101 manifold, which is a higher rise and set the carb and air filter on it and the hood hit it. Hope this helps. Dave

I have an Edelbrock Performer on my '78 L82 and have no clearance problems. I run the stock Q-Jet and it does sit slightly higher, but doesn't create any problems with the stock air cleaner. The carburetor does sit slightly more rearward closer to the distributor, and that makes one of the air intake flex duct stretch more than normal, but still fits.

I haven't tried this, but if you use a higher rise intake, you can try a drop base air cleaner base and it may still make for hood clearance, but you may want to take measurements for determining that.

I also have the Performer 2101. The RPM is about .600" taller an would work fine with a drop base air cleaner. The 2101 is the same height as a stock manifold.

Here are the different manifold heights:

(front ht + rear ht) /2 = height at center

Performer #2101                                 (3.50+4.6-)/2 = 4.05

Performer Air Gap #2601                 (3.72+4.92)/2 = 4.32

Performer RPM  #7101                     (4.00+5.30)/2 = 4.65

Performer RPM Air Gap #7501      (4.20+5.25)/2 = 4.725

The 2101 is a great looking manifold. It's available in polished aluminum, brushed aluminum, and also the new "silver star" finish which is polished and sealed to keep it that way. I am getting the 3701 which is essentially the same but with EGR provisions. I wish it was available with that special finish, but comes only in brushed aluminum or polished.

Did anyone use the Perfomer Intake on their 73 Vette with stock tach-drive dist. I was going to put it on mine but the dist hole in the intake is not the same OD as the base of the dist. Did anyone encounter this? Will the machined dist. bore in the block keep it centered? It does set on the intake dist. hole

I think Edelbrock makes a different manifold for the older distributors. You will wind up with a leak unless you change distributors

Thanks Big Fish I've been a Chevy nut ever since I was a kid first time I ever ran into a problem like this. We'll keep our eye open for more info.

Thanks for all the input guys! I was wondering if I could run my stock Q-jet with the performer or not. That tells me it's good to go!

I can't wait to get it on and try it out! WoaHoooo!
