Topic: is there a Dr in the house?
in Forum: C3 Engines
I have been avoiding posting this thread for over a week. Then I thought of 4-5 guys off the top of my head in this forum with problems a h*** of a lot more serious than mine. I知 sure there are many more.
long story short. I was traveling down Interstate 90 a week ago last Sunday when my car overheated. Pulled it off to the berm as quick as I could. Had it towed home. Waited until the next morning to start it. good news is that it started right away. Bad news is that it was going BANG! BANG! BANG! Before I could shut it down. Always wanted to tear down an engine and rebuild it. guess I値l get my chance now. I値l keep you posted. Looks like there値l be a room opening up at C3X.

Hope it's not too bad. Did it loose the coolant, or overheat for some other reason?

Sorry to hear the bad news, my car overheated 2 weeks ago and I drove home about a 2 miles Got home and the coolant was boiling
Luckily nothing happened, replaced a few hoses, thermostat, no problems since.
Good luck with the rebuild, may better thing only come out of it

thanks guys.
radiator hose to the heater core broke loose and was touching the exhaust manifold. flames shooting out the bottom of the car, probably the anti-freeze. just before it stopped there was a loud pow. the PCV valve was blown out of the valve covers. the flames went out when the engine shut off. smoke coming out of the valve covers. coolant was boiling in the overflow tank. a guy in a 70 Nova stopped and came running back with a fire extinguisher. didn't need it thank The Lord. mine was sitting on a shelf in the garage. two fire trucks pulled up a couple of minutes after I stopped. some one on the interstate must have called them. they went over the entire car to make sure nothing was on fire. it wasn't a total loss. one of the firemen gave me a compliment, "nice car". it was an Abbott and Costello moment.

Steve, sorry I didn't answer sooner. I didn't have it running long enough to determine where the noise was coming from. it wasn't a tick, tick, tick. it was quite loud. was afraid of doing more damage.
Bill, thanks, just not the way I wanted to get those ponies. guess you won't be seeing me out at QS&L anytime soon. my son who's in the Navy is back this week and next. I probably won't start taking it apart until he leaves. besides this weather has been brutal.
Sorry to hear about your bad news. I had that happen to me 2 years ago. The number 5 piston bottom broke ..shot across & broke the #8 piston. Lucky I was <1000 RPM at the time. When I tore the engine down I found that however rebuilt it last did a bad job. It's a BB 427 w/ L88 heads. It's still in my shop. I bought as new GM 454HO & so far it's been great. If you're nunning a SB they are fairly easy do, just take your time. If I get another C3 someday I'll be lookig for a SB as they are easier & much cheaper to repair.
Good Luck
